Message: Is your o2 sensor in front of the cat or behind it? I cant see why there would be any MIL`s or any problems except maybe being illegal when the o2 is in front of the cat.Anyone know why they say that you need this cat-box to remove the cats?

Message: If you have only an O2 sensor in front of the cat then you can remove it and you'd be fine. But most every new vehicle I've seen has them behind the Cat so that it can monitor the Cats performance. The KatBox is supposed to send the Correct signal to the Pcm even after the Cat is gone. Basically your just fooling your PCM into thinking the Cat is still their and nothing is wrong with it. If you remove the Cat and do have a Sensor behind it and don't use the Katbox then you'll get the Check engine light and it may hurt performance although I'm not 100% sure on that. I think it makes the truck go into limp mode or something like that.

Message:
The KatBox is a simple "Tick Tock" circuit that sends the correct voltages back to the PCM. As long as you installed it on the rear O2, you'll be fine.
BTW: Removing the cat on a V6 doesn't do anything for performance until 3000rpm on up (but sounds really good though). Best bet would have been to keep it legal and install a CarSound high-flow cat instead.

Message: Mpjunkie, Not all 4.7's have 3 cats. Dodge went to the 3 cat setup across the board on the Daks in mid 2000. I got lucky, I have a 4.7 with only 1 cat. The window sticker power rating tells the story without having to crawl under the truck. 235 HP has 1 cat, 230 has 3. All 2001 and up have the 3 cats though to my knowledge.

Message: I didn't know the 2001 4.7's had 3 cats! I thought the 2 "pre-cats" were it! Is their any way to get rid of the 2 up front and just have the one before the muffler? I would want to replace it with a high flow also. I think having no cat on a 4.7L might not be the best idea as you might lose to much torque due to smaller cubic inches compared to the 5.9L. But I definitly don't think having 3 cats helps things much!

Message: Yeah, 1 good free flowing cat seems like the best setup to me. Dodge engineers, go figure. Seems a lot of people dont know about the diff cat setups and HP ratings as a result. Also, things like the JBA headers work a lot better with the 1 cat setup cause they are not being restricted right at the end of the header. Mine has 1 o2 sensor if I remember correctly, now I have to go look and see if it is in front or back of the cat. I think it is in front.

Message: Really eh Hawkeye, well you know what that means you can take it off if you want it,Dont know why I have 3 cats and 4 o2s we dont even have emision testing here, gota look into this I cant see it taking so many readings from 4 o2s all the time,I just put in the 3923 plugs and the old ones were all burning real nice, guess the cat setup isnt hurting it much cause the truck hauls ass for a 4x4,smokes the tires no prob.I dont think headers would do much for me but your setup hawkeye might just be worthwhile

Message: Hawkeye, Did you get a recall notice on your '00 for an emissions sensing problem? My 2000 4.7 Durango was recalled for an issue with the PCM not monitoring the O2 sensor behind the Cat to detect Cat failure. I asked around and checked out the TSB system and I believe the recall went across all early 2000 Dodge trucks and several Jeep models.

Message: Yeah Art, I was so glad when I found out about the different cat setups. Taking off the cat has crossed my mind since we dont have inspections here, but, the way my luck runs Id be the one that somehow gets caught. I may go to a free flow cat though. As for the headers, yeah I am really excited getting some JBA's as soon as money allows. I think it stinks bigtime that Dodge switched the setup. I personally think that the JBA's will still add a little to the 3 cat setup but your right, it should do really well on the single cat setup.

Art, I stand corrected. Something just didnt seem right about the sensors, so I just went out and rechecked, I found a second sensor. Dang thing was hidden on top of the pipe after the cat where the pipe bends up to go over a cross-member. So I actually have 2. I didnt think that the 1 sensor was right. Still only 1 cat though. Hehe. I want to check into the high flow cat. My only concern is loosing too much back pressure.

Message: Hawkeye, I think the problem was fixed by late September of '99. If your truck is later than that, the JTEC flash was probably fixed. I was more interested in whether the O2 sensor was actually there. Strange how things hide like that. I did't notice the pre-cats on my '01. I had to go out and look after reading the post.

Message: So lets say someone comes up with a way to trick the sensors on the pre-cats. Would it be possible to remove them, and just use a JBA y-pipe, or would you need an extention. I'll take a better look at it when my headers show up and i do the install. If at all possible, i'd like to remove the 2 pre-cats, trick the sensors, and run the JBA y-pipe. You guys got any ideas or anything to point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Message: Hey glen does jba make a y-pipe for the 4.7?I didnt see any listed and Bernd the 2 o2s infront of the cats are for engine management and the 2 after to check how the cats are performing,is that right?so we would need a y-pipe with the placement for the 2 front o2s and a kat-box to hook up to the 2 rear o2s?Is that right Bernd or does it work some other way
thanks

The PreCats on the 2001 models are pretty open if you ask me. I just installed a set of headers on a 2001 R/T this last weekend (not yesterday) and his truck has been running better (from what I heard) than with the manifolds. Those precats are already a highflow from the factory.
