Subject: Raced a newer Cavalier IP: Logged
Message: After we left from some families house for Easter today I had to run down to my sister's house before I headed home. A Cavalier came on me fast and changed lanes next to me.
The first time I got a good launch and got from him slightly but never seemed to realy pull him.
The next light we lined up and he got out from the hole as good as I did if not better as I was trying to NOT spin out. He got just in front and I caught him but didn't pass. His was a 5 speed and he was running through his gears quicker than my auto did. We were side by side and he was in 3rd gear and then his engine made a weird sound like a slight downshift (which was impossible with his MANUAL) and his engine tone changed. He took a one car lead which and at about 90 I finally seemed to be holding even again and thought I may even be taking him.
By then my kids thought it was cool but the wife didn't...
Anyway. I know a new 2 door with the 2.2 Ecotech (variable valve timing) and a 5 speed should be a good match for my heavy a$$ 4X4 with what I have in it for weight. Heck, I thought my brother's new Cavalier 2.2 ecotech AUTO was a night and day diff over the last generation of Cavaliers. the last generation were slow as sh*t.
But me thinks this fukker may have had a small shot of the ol' Nitrous. Because that SOUND in mid 3rd gear sure sounded like he used it for a short time. Because he pulled slowly at that point then like he quit using it breifly after when I seemed to be regaining.
I mean, it IS possible a slightly modded newer 5 speed Cavalier run a Dak from 0 to 60 or so.
Have any of you had any similar run ins with the newer generation of sh*t box Cavalier's?
Man. Not being able to walk him makes me want my 4.10 gears and programmer. That's all I would have needed.

Message: I had a similar run in with a Nissan Maxima, them suns of bichs are quick,. It seems that the newer the vehicle is the quicker it is. I have practiccaly the same mods as you, but I have a 5 - speed 4.7L with 3.55s, and mine is a club cab, I do not have a lift but I do have 32 inch tires.

Message: The wife has a '03 Cavalier coupe with the 5 spd. It's fairly quick, surprisingly. It would give a 4.7 Dak a run, sure. I doubt it would beat mine, but Graphite, yours sounds like a heavy beast. BTW, the older 2.2 Ecotec doesn't have variable valve timing. Seats of the pants feels like it would run a mid 15 sec 1/4 mile.
Even though you call it a sh*tbox, have to say that it's been 100% reliable, no trips to the dealer at all. I can't say that about my Dakota!

Message: It was a 3 lane road with NO ONE else and no side streets for 2 miles. What's wrong with a short race?
I knew ppl who had NASTY Hot Rods and did quick races with their kids buckled in.
half the scum in Phoenix don't even buckle a kid in. And if their imigrants from SOUTH D' BOARDER they think a sedan can seat a family of 7!
Anyway. I know the older ones (NOT called Ecotechs) were standard OHC. Not fast at all. I smoked them silly.
But the new VVT based Ecotech IS a lot better. Like i said I drove my bro's to test drive it and even with the auto it isn't slow like the last generation. Plus his OD auto has closer gears. the 5 speed should make up for a lot. My 2001 Altima 5 speed 2.4 ran some cars and trucks too. But it didn't sound cool and could not tow :P
I think that fukker hit the Nitrous in 3rd gear because he slowly pulled and then stopped pulling which was WEIRD for him to have any advantage at that point. Although his gears were closer together by far than my auto with 3.55's.
the weight sucks. I'm ADDING weight while most REUCE. I added a DEEP CYCLE Battery last month in ADDITION to my large factory battery not too mention all my other gadgets I've added.
Time for more mods in my Dak.

Message: I'd be ashamed if my car couldn't beat a truck. I drove my wifes little 1.8T Jetta sunday. That little sucker would blow the doors off my Dak on any road, strait or crooked. I need to Gtech that little monster some time. It's way faster than my Dak. The turbo kicks in at about 2000 and your at 6 by the time you think to shift. Sticks like glue in curves, just makes you want to go faster. She want let me drive with her in it. She hates to ride with me anyway.

Message: Well I DID race a Jetta Turbo 1.8 about a year , maybe a year and a half ago.
I THINK it was before my HO cams, but not sure. I also had less weight ADDED to my Dak at the time. but from the hole to 50 or so (going from 3 or 4 stoplights side by side) we were both about even.
One time he'd just EDGE my truck by 1/2 length and I'd stay. Another time I got him by the same and he didn't catch up by time we let off.
The 3rd or 4th time he spun so bad he smoked the intersection a little.
At the next light I asked "WHAT HAPPENED" and he said he tried it that time with out the traction control. I made a post about it back when it happened. you could probably find it in a search :)
That Cavalier probably DID have a shot of the gas. I could swear I could hear the change in pitch in his engine sound midway through 3rd gear. He didn't pull like a rocket, but it was enough to make a difference just long enough to pull a car length while he was on it.
Those cars are peobably light too.
I don't like not being able to take a sh*t box. At least it wasn't a car with a spoiler, fart can, or any of them rice stickers. But it sounded a little louder. But that was all.
This summer I DO need to do my gear swap at LEAST. I'm behind schedule for my mods. I was SUPPOSED to do that last winter but it didn't happen and my entire tax return, plus my wifes, plus extra $$$ went to getting our kids two brand new ATV's. Those lucky punks. :P

Message: my freind has a late 80's cutlas supreme those little 4door family things so out of pitty i raced him the one day and smoked him horably. so knowing my dak was faster than those cars i was in a small town about an hour away from my house and a very simular car pulled up beside me at the light(not sure what it was all black no emblems backend looked weird a little rounder trunk lid). he reved it up a little and chalenged me so knowing i was faster i raced him to the next light i got about 4 truck lenths on him. so at the that light he laughed alittle and asked to try it agian. so i said what the hell and the light tuured green and all i saw was a cloud of blue green smoke and his tail lights. at the next light we were sitting there after having my butt handed to me on a platter he was revving it up a little higher and i could now here the turbo popoff valve and the blue green smoke was from his nitrus purges. that thing was fast since that was the last light before the 4 lane he took off like a bat out of hell he must of hit 140 before i hit 60.

Message: You are a fool! I suppose a 3 lane road protects you from blow outs and rolling over? From the Cavalier side swiping you? Or from animals darting out in front of you while you're doing 90? Long as your kids think your cool, that's all that matters. Children should be taken from fathers like you idiot.

I guess I shouldn't mention to you fool about the quick 110 MPH blasts while towing my trailer either? Oh, that's only on a 2 lane divided hwy :P But that was just a quick thing against a Chevy here and there. I usually keep my towing slower at just 80MPH.

Message: Double clutch. in mid gear?
It didn't rev up at all. I just heard a CHANGE in the, how should I say, TONE of the exhaust sound for a few steady seconds.
Seriously, it reminded me of people at the track hitting the juice 2/3 the way down the track. They don't shift, you just get that change in sound.
He didn't have any NOS stickers, wing, etc. so it's possible the guy was intelligent enough to have a nitrous setup and some other little mods.
I admit tho, the latest gerneration of them spam cans is much better than the last as far as power goes.

I see you are in about, 7 grade? Instead of explaining it in kindergarten terms so you can understand, just try to think what happens in a blow out at 45 vs. 90 or trying to stop from 45 vs. 90 to avoid a collision. DUH...
Now lets throw our kids in for a little road racing...
