I was searching the forum for some information and stumbled across a post that ssys that the 4.7 comes with either 1 cat or 3. Why is this? I hadn't even thought about looking at mine. Just curious. BTW, I'd like to say what a great and helpful forum this is especially for mechanically inexperienced people like me.

I got 3 cats ;( I live in California. I believe that CA is the only state that has the 3 cats on the 4.7

Hope this helps,

My understanding is that 2000 4.7 Daks are either 'Federal"(1 cat after Y-pipe) or 'LEV'(2 precats before Y-pipe and 1 after).

2001+ 4.7 Daks, I believe, are all 'LEV'

I have a '01 RC 4.7 5spd and mine has the
2 precats --> y-pipe--> main cat --> then muffler.
This setup has to be killin the flow... i wonder if the dealership would care if i had the 2 precats removed and put the catbox on to fool the o2 sensors...hmmmm....

3 cats on my dakota! Crap. All this time I've been worrying about losing low end torque from less backpressure by installing an exhaust that's too free flowing. I'm not too sure but I'm guessing that as long as there are 3 cats there will always be some backpressure.

I have a 2001 R/T that also has all 3 cats 2 pre and 1 main. I talked to Mopar and they say I can use the headers and y-pipe from the 2000 model R/T. this will eliminate the two pre-cats and I will have to buy the hi-flow because my main cat is 1 in and 1 out and 2000 was 2 in and 1 out. Just a thought for you 4.7 types.

Dodge went to the 3 cat setup in mid 2000. I have found quite a few folks with 2000's that have the 3 cats. I have only the 1 cat. Easiest way to tell without crawling under the truck is to look at the window sticker. If it list the engine rating at 235 HP it has 1 cat, 230 HP has 3 cats. It takes away 5 HP by having the 2 extra cats. Also I have found that things like the JBA headers have bigger gains on the 1 cat setup like mine. Obviously from not being restricted right after the end of the headers like the 3 cat setup has. Only thing I can figure is that Dodge decided it would be more cost effective to start making them all the same instead of the Federal and LEV setups.

Thanks R/T_dakotas. That's an interesting point. I'm gonna be putting in the jba headers in within a week. I know it's not legal to remove the cat, but does this apply to only the main cat? I'd love to remove the 2 pre-cats and get the full potential from the headers considering the money I spent on them. And Hawkeye...too late. I already crawled under there! LOL
