Subject: hypertech or superchips? IP: Logged
Message: which one is "beter"... has more features, more useable for tuning, etc. I am interested in getting a programmer, and they both seem pretty much the same. any major differences? any minor differences? I have an 01 RC R/T, and have the stupid speed and rev limiter, and it is really PI$$ING me off that my truck is still pulling strong at 5200 and it goes nuts, and freaks out at the rev limiter. I'm about to put on a modified intake, and then a cam is in the near future, but first I want to tackle the rev limiter, and tuning is something else I'm after, like the timing advance.
any thoughts? anyone dealt with both types, and have a preference? if you work for a place that sells em, I'd definitely appreciate some professional advice, too!

Message: I can tell you first off if you've got a 3.9, 4.7 or 5.2 you have to go with the Superchips - Hypertech only makes their PP III for the '01 5.9 .
Secondly, considering my '99 Dak Sport is a 3.9 I had to go with a Superchips and I wasn't disappointed. After I put a 3" PA body lift and 3" Fabtech suspension lift with 33x12.50 BFG's + 15x8 EA 058's onto it, it seriously sucked my gas down like it was water and the fastest I could push it was around 70 on the highway - horrible. Now that I've set it up with a Superchips tuner, my gas mileage has increased compared to pre-lift. Now I can actually go up hills without worrying and I don't dread the highway. Definitely worth it whichever way you go.

Message: just the tb? 68mm is pretty big, unless you run a cam and some other major internal mods (heads, exhaust, intake, etc) you're going to do worse than before... stick to the low 50 mm range unless you're going to have a supercharger and some other major tuning done. what the superchips and hypertech allow you to do is override the factory rev limiters and speed limiter, as well as tune timing and other nifty stuff for the performance mods added to your truck... think of it as adjusting your carb and distributor after adding mods to a precomputer vehicle.

Message: Hey Matt,
I have an 01 Dakota R/T also. Mine was doing the exact same thing yours was doing. I just got the computer flashed by B&G Specialist(aka B&G M-1 Flash). It cured my 5200 rev limiter problem. It shifts at 5500 rpms every time. Even 2nd to 3rd gear is 5500rpms where the stock computer would shift at 4000-4200rpms. Get the Flash, it will fix your problem. It also adds 30HP to the rear wheels.......40HP at the crank. No hypertech or superchips can even come close.

Message: I'd say get the superchips until you really get serious with mods cause thats what i am doing. I have a 01 R/T and i have the Superchips it gave me 15hp to the wheels and 25tq. Raised the limiter from 5300 to 5600rpms made it run alot less rich, and raised my topspeed, i pushed her up over 130 onetime. But untile i get a new cam and heads i will just keep the computer the way it is.

Message: for the 5.9, the b&G may be better, since I'm of the 4.7 variety, I'm not researching dyno graphs,
but one thing I like about the SC's on my 4.7, is I can change it to stock at the drop of a hat. As I did before my yearly TX state inspection, where b/c I live near Houston, it includes the emission, which is actually, just looking into the obd port for any codes recently.
