Message: Measure the dimensions of the radiator. On the 4.7 V-8 the dimemsions should by 23-1/2" by 18-7/8" by 1-1/2" Mine was only 15/16" thick and my Dakota was heating up. I put the new radiator in and it is doing fine now. I think Dodge put the wrong radiator in some V-8's. Please check the radiator size and let me know what you find.

Message: I got rid of my fan/ and clutch, year ago on my 01, 4.7, QC, etc. Only the stock electric.
I live in Se Tx also....= HOT out here!
You don't need it. I do have the towing pack radiator, and a manual trany, and 180 t stat.

Message: is there actually a difference in size of the radiator between the different engines used?
the reason i ask is on my '00 QC 3.9 5spd, i was in an accident a while back and they change the radiator and put in one from a truck with an auto trans. i don't know if the donor truck was an 8 or not but since my truck seems to run a little cooler than before.
i run just the stock electric fan and a 195 tstat and this thing never gets hot even idling in the south louisiana traffic.

Message: Go to any autoparts website, Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts and look up a radiator for the vehicle you have a nd it will specify that the core size is 23-1/2 by 18-7/8 by 1.5 inches. I have seen the smaller radiator on some V-6 engines. My 01 quad cab is running much cooler now that I have changed out the radiator. The clutch fan hardly ever works. It mostly free spins. there were two different numbers on the original radiator that I took. There was a 52028816Ac which the dealership said should go in the 01 Dakota and Durango but he could not tell me what the core size was for that number. There was also a 52529243AF on the radiator and the dealer could not reference that number. I paln on taking the old radiator to the Dodge dealership this Friday. I'll let you know what happens.

Message: Daddio the 4.7 w/o max cooling has one radiator and the 4.7 w/max cooling and the 5.9 have another radiator different part numbers but mount the same so either will fit Chrysler started putting aluminum rads in the max cooling pkg for the 3.9 and 4.7 I have a 99 5.9 R/T with all the heavy duty parts on it and it still ran a little warmer than i liked untill i changed the fan clutch. (when i ran the part number chrysler had superceded it 4-5 times so i knew there was a problem with them mine wasnt engaging when hot my father's 00 Durango R/T had same prob went away after being replaced) difference is core thickness and material usually non max cooling rads are copper/brass if you need/want part numbers or a copy of the parts catalog let me know

is there any physical way to tell?
maybe i can use that built in tranny cooler for something else?

Message: Daddio the best way to tell rads apart is by part number stamped on it but usually core thickness and material can be used to tell. max cooling rads have the double core if you look from the side the core should be as wide as the tanks. auto tranny rads are sometimes superceded for the manual tranny rads by the factory. common practice by chrysler to stock less part numbers. you could always use it as a engine oil cooler

Message: Thanks parts manager
I looked at an 01 Durango with the 4.7 and it had the same size radiator that I took out of my 01 Dak. He says his durango does not run hotter than normal. You are also right about the core thickness, the original one was only half as thick as the tanks and the new one is the same size aas the tanks and my Dak runs cooler now with same clutch anf electric fan. My computer is starting to mess us though. I will send it to autocraft for a rebuild with a lifetime warranty.

Message: your welcome Marcus hope all works out well just keep an eye on that clutch fan it shouldn't freewheel all the time but as long as your truck runs cool should be ok especially with the thicker core rad

Message: Parts manager,
my fan clutch doen't turn at all, or freewheel, unless I take it down off the shelf in my garage.
I'm still at a loss why you'd need it. I guess my manual tranny runs cooler, and the 180 t-stat helps also. Down here in SE Tx, the gauge never even goes near half way.
I've heard the 3.7 didn't even bother putting it on.

Message: when the fan relay doesn't work you'll wish you still had your clutch fan. seriously I guess you run your a/c almost all the time so the aux electric fan is always on. do you have the max cooling pkg with the hvy duty rad? most cars/trucks with electric fans only don't turn the fan on till 225-235degrees which is too hot for me unless the bypass the relay on reprogram the pcm to turn it on sooner. its just my preference to have a good mechanical fan with a hvy duty clutch and fan blade that always works when the truck runs.

Message: What he said, and I do have the max cooling package with the towing pack I believe.
And, I do usually have the a/c on, here in the Houston/Galveston area, even if not on much at all.
I also have bypassed/shut off my heater core, so I drive around most of the year with the a/c thermostat in the red zone, and it's really cold.
When I want heat to work normal again, I open the hood and turn an easy to get to stock cock 90 degrees.
If my stock electric goes down, I can always screw the fan clutch/fan back on in about a minute, no wrenchs needed.

Message: In January I installed a Flex-i-lite 295 dual elctric fan in my 2K 4x4 CC Dak with 4.7 V8. It took me 2-1/2 weeks to modify the shroud but is worth it. Previously I had replaced 2 relays on factory elecric fan and a clutch fan. No more. Now when towing my engine and transmission temp. are now lower. I do have a trans. temp gauge. As soon as I get a new scanner I will scan pics. taken with my wife's 35mm camera. Will also send to Flex-i-lite as Bob in customer service wants pics of it in truck.

Message: chris Flex-a-lite makes good parts/kits sounds like you wont be overheating anytime soon. I wasnt bashing electric fans i was only stating that in my 5.9RT with a working clutch and max/cool rad with the 9blade fan it runs under 200. I had a 87 Grand National for 10 years with only an electric fan I had the a/c bypass wiring on it so i could turn it on any time from inside. anybody that knows or owned a GN can testify they put out more heat than a blast furnace. the single fan and factory rad was enough to keep it cool
