Message: I'm still scratching my head as to why the rear end in the Dakota needs to be changed out every 12K miles. But I picked up the oils from my dealer anyway, and planned to do it myself. ($35) It's MOPAR 75W-90 synthetic gear lube and their additive as well, but the manual says that the 9.25 axle needs 2.32L(4.9pts) plus 4oz of the LSD additive. This totals 82.4 ozs and makes it a 5% mix in the differential. When I went to the dealer, I was told to use 2qts of the syn-oil and 8 oz of the additive! This totals 72oz and makes it about 12.5% mixture. Even the MOPAR additive bottle recommends a 2-5% rate of mix. And I think running with a level 10oz below recommended could do some damage or cause early wear on those gears. This dealer also used only 5qt of oil when they did a free oil change for me on the 4.7 V8, when 6qt are shown in the capacity chart. I haven't been too impressed with the dealership, and now this just confirms that they are one mixed up bunch of folks.
Then, I found out that the Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear oil has the additive already in it, and I can buy 3 qt of that for $6.95qt at AutoZone. Lesson learned - beware of dealership service centers.

Take a breath dude. The Mobile1 does NOT have the friction additive required for your anti-slip differential, unless they have recently revised their formulas. As for the amount of friction additive, ok, they may be dumbasses for that.
I'll bet you saw 5qts on your receipt (I am assuming) and thought they put only 5qts in the crankcase. At our dealership, all oil change receipts show 5qts, but we fill them to spec up to 6 qts for the standard price...maybe they do the same thing. Don't check the oil level HOT on 4.7s either, it WILL show low. They take longer to drain down than most other engines.

Message: Thanks for the info Jason ... yes, I checked the Mobil 1 website and they now refer to their gear oil as Synthetic LS and claim to exceed the G-L-5 standards for limited slip applications. Some other techs also verified that the grip additive is in this lube too.
The low motor oil condition after an oil change was seen on the dipstick, not a receipt, and this happened twice before I stopped going back there for any work on the truck. I assumed that the error was made but I couldn't help think that they may be shorting it a quart because it was under a promotional thing for free oil changes. It didn't cost me anything except adding some oil to bring it up to the full line when cold. The same dealership found this vehicle for me from another one, when I purchased it, and when I removed the dealer label from the tailgate, I noticed gouges in the paint where the previous one was removed (with a metal tool?) before the new one was applied to cover it all up.
Now, I have to take it in for the recalls though, and I don't know what to expect after that is done. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. Or maybe they can just give me the parts and I'll take care of the installation. Honest customer service is becoming harder to find.

Message: Sounds like a dealership full of dumbasses. We don't allow vehicles to leave the dealership without a QC (quality check) on fluid levels following a routine service.
The gouges in the paint are typical of dumbasses not knowing how to remove a simple decal/emblem.
DC will not allow them to give you the parts for your own install. If they choose to do so, they do it at their own risk.
Don't let one dealership taint your view of all dealerships.

Message: The 9.25 should hold two quarts and I would still use the additive if I were you. The GL-5 oils all brag that no additive is needed but mine always has needed it.

Message: Also, unless you are doing some type of racing, I would just put conventional gear oil in it for $2 per quart.

Message: Thanks guys, I probably will use the MOPAR stuff this time ... and the additive. I'll need to do more research on the other lubes for now. And Jason, I know that not all dealerships are like these locals. I have 2 others that I can use, and it's just a little longer drive ... but since I like my Dakota so much, that extra time driving will be OK with me.
Does anyone know how to quiet some body squeaks from under the bed?
