Subject: pwr steer to manual conversion IP: Logged
Message: I would like to remove my power steering and convert it to manual steering for drag racing. The truck is a 96 dak, originally equipped with the 3.9 V6. Are there any Dakotas that had a manual steering rack that will be a direct bolt in? What years?

Message: Remove the pump and the lines. Plug the holes at the steering unit to keep out dirt.
Don't get much easier then that

Message: Rufus don't power steering boxes and "manual" have different gears? When my truck idles out I have very little steering capabilites, and braking for that matter.

Message: They are different; using Rufus' method will work, but you'll really have to muscle the steering. Full steering capabilities are still there. Should be fine for drag racing; I drove a '70 Coronet on the street that way years ago, probably good for around 5 hp.

Message: Yeah i know i can use the power rack, but a manual rack is geared lower for easier steering, the truck will be occasionally street driven and it's a long drive to the track every week. I'm not even really concerned about the horsepower gain, it will just give me some extra room in the engine compartment since the engine i'm using is a race engine - very high maintanence.

Message: Try going to rockauto.com and use thier search to find a year that had manual steering, if there was one. Some thing for a non-power master cylinder.
I had to do the same thing on my ol'V8 S-10, manual gear box and manual master cylinder, luckily there were non-power trucks of that era. It was a lot better than horsing the steering wheel or trying to bend the crap out of the brake pedal ;-)

Message: Since no one with definite interchange knowledge has responded, you might try looking for the part at car-part.com and see if you get anything listed (many salvage yards together online).

Message: Thanks, using those websites i was able to determine that 1991 was the last year with a manual rack and i found some used ones in this area on car-part.com. I will probably take a chance on it bolting up, if it isn't a direct fit i'll just fabricate a mounting bracket.

Message: You could get really creative if the A/C compressor and steering pump rotate the same direction. Why not adapt an A/C compressor clutch to the steering pump? You could have the assist when you wanted it, and de-energize the clutch when you want to eleminate the pump's parasitic loss for racing.
Kinda makes you want to try it, huh?.

Message: Autozone part number 815K6 serpentine belt can be used to
bypass the power steering pump. It’s a tight fit but will go on the
pulleys. Standard routing except skip the PS pulley.
Very hard to steer but doable.
I used this as a temporary fix when traveling and experiencing a
big leak in the rack.
