Message: Easy, different motor. The 91 and earlier engines were based on the small block dated back to the 60's and had a terrible EFI system. In 92-93, they came out with the magnum engines which shared nothing with the older engines but the bore and stroke. More than 85% of the engine changed.

Message: In 92, the 5.2 V8 was rated 230 hp & the 3.9 V6 had 180 hp. In 94, they chngd some emissions on the 5.2 V8 was reduced to 220 hp & the 3.9 V6 changed to 175 hp.

Message: Sounds better... I guess the All Data had the wrong HP spec.s. I just purchased the 92'and saw those figures which made me frown. Still feels a little sluggish @ 230 HP.

Message: You also have to excpect that after 10 years the engine is most likely way out of tune compared to the day it was mafufactured and will no longer be producing that much HP without a overhaul. Look at the TQ numbers also and see if they compare to the last 5.2's that were made. I think my 98 5.2 was 300lb or just under.

Message: You guys said that the 92 3.9L V-6 has 180bhp and the 94 changed the 3.9L to 175 bhp. I was told that my 1993 3.9 has 175bhp and not 180bhp. Did they change the emmisions on the Dakotas in 1993 or 1994. And if they changed it in 1993, is there any way that I can modify it back to get the few extra horses?

Message: To say the difference between the magnum and pre-magnum is that great is a bit of an exageration. They really improved the heads, which simplified emissions and allowed more cam and compression, which is the difference between the magnum and pre-magnum. There was a year where some Dodges got the magnum motors and others still got the old style, I think it was 92. Maybe those numbers you got were from a 92 non-magnum. Actually almost all of the magnum stuff can be fitted onto the old style 318, there were many new parts and some bolt holes changed but deep down it's still the 318 they have been building since 1968. Look at any brand of V-8 from the 80's and you will see pretty low HP numbers compared to todays motors, nobody could figure out how to deal with those emissions.
