Subject: Heavy Duty Spring for 440 Motor? IP: Logged
Message: Was wondering if anyone that has done the 440 Conversion in the 4 banger did a upgrade on the front coil springs? Just wondering if the frontend dips any with the 440 in it or not? Getting everything lined up for a conversion in my 1996 and i'm going to tub her out and all. Going with a 440 with a 4 speed all tubbed out. Any help on the frontend and any mod's i need to do would be nice. Read all the info about buying the motor mounts and all, but didn't see if the coils needed to be upgraded to a heavier coil to support the weight.
Thanks,
Steve

Message: The stock springs definately won't get it. Any stock or after-market front spring will work. I'm sure you will be upgrading the rear springs along with the new rearend as well.

Message: Thanks everyone, I'm going to give them a look and I also might buy some racing springs and just cut them to the proper length i need. That's what my dad's friend does for his racing cars. You can buy these long racing springs and cut them down. They do it a inch at a time. I'm going with a coil over shock rearend setup. The leafs are going down the road. We are going to take the cab and bed off and do a full frame restore with all mods. The frame is getting totally boxed and some other added support also. Thanks for the help on the 5.2 2WD springs.
Merry Christams Everyone

Message: It isn't a good idea to cut the springs. If the top or bottom is cut off you lose handling performance. The top and bottom of them are made with different tensions than the middle. Just look at a set and you'll see what I mean.

Message: There's racing spring that can be cut to the right height. You don't want to cut much like you said, but my dad's friend is racing alfa's and he get springs that can be cut and used. I'm going to look at the Dodge V8 springs and give them a look first. I think the V8 springs are going to do the job. I'll just use the ones used in the same year Dakota's in the V8's and see how they work. I'm getting rid of the case iron heads to free up some weight for sure and some other goodies. Going with a electric water pump and electric fan also. I'll make sure to post a website with plenty of picture and measurements for everyone to follow. Got some web space on a server and i'll do a site on the conversion. Thanks again everyone for the help.
Take care
