I have a 1997 Dakota Extended Cab with a 318 v8 with about 109k miles. The Catalytic Converter is starting to rattle so its probly time for a new one... The truck has a flowmaster cat-back dual exhaust and K&N air filter. I've found a lot of posts about gutting cats, but not much about if High flow ones cause any problems with this setup.
My question is if I put in a High Flow catalytic converter, would that cause the "check engine" light to turn on? Also, can anybody recommend a good cat and where to buy it? I'll probably replace the 02 sensors just to be safe...
The laws in Florida are okay with High Flow converters so that shouldn't be an issue. Also the truck has the "california emissions package" if that means anything... Thanx
As stuff needs replacing, u might as well upgrade!!

Go with the high flow, i have a high flow cat and a single in dual out flowmaster 40 series (original flows) with 2 steel turn downs, the high flow cat is made by CarSound, and they are available at most muffler shopsand it didnt cause my check engine light to come on....

i'll second that i have a carsound also, no reason why a check
engine light would EVER come on, as long as the cat is in
working order it's doing its job

But illegal in the U.S., regardless of laws in your state. It's a federal crime.
The high flow cats work great and won't give fault codes.

carsound makes a nice highflow replacement.
Great choice on going with one instead of removing it, the environment thanks you....along with your wallet if you ever got caught. Here in washington I believe it's $5,000 fine for running with no cat on a public highway.

Will a high-flow cat improve your exhaust's sound any?? my 4.7L sounds OK, but it's a little raspy in the upper-RPM range... I just have a Flowmaster origonal 40 series muffler in place of the stock muffler, and a gibson 2" to 3.5" tip on the stock tailpipe....

just had cat back duals with glass packs installed on my 91 5.2 dakota. the sound is great, but the volume isnt quite what i was expecting. mechanic said it was because of the cat. was wondering if the high flow would help on that?

DaffyDak... the high flow cat will give you a louder sound, i dont know if thats an improvement to you.. but the set up i have, has a deep throaty sound .. everytime i go to my girlfriends apartment, i set off at least 3 car alarms...and the high flow cat gave me a little better throttle response, and just barely better gas milage, maybe .5mpg increase

A friend of mine installed a resistor on the wire that sends a signal from the downstream to the upstream O2 sensor. This resolved the "problem" of a high flow CAT tripping the engine light. Which wire sends the signal and what is the recommended value of the resistor?
