Message: Is anyone else as crazzy as I am?
I'm dropping a 4L Isuzu Diesel into my 99 Dakota 4X4. Its a tight fit but not as bad as the 2.8L Isuzu Turbo diesel I dropped into my Jeep Gr Cherokee last year.
http://www.canev.com/Jeep.html
Does anyone make a suspension lift for the Dakota. I can get the motor in but have front diff clearance problems. It would be nice to drop the diff a few inches.
Thanks
Randy

Message: awesome, i was just thinking how awesome it would be if you could get a diesel in a dakota from the factory. great mileage from a 4 cylinder turbo, and lighter weight than those big guys and they get 18 or so.

Message: haha, interesting. a 5.9 inline6 cummins turbo diesel would be pretty wicked i think. bump it up to like 400 hp and 900 tq. it'd be a little front heavy though
anybody know the weight comparison of a ctd 5.9 and a 5.2/5.9 v8?

Message: The Cummins 5.9 I6 is HEAVY!!!
It weighs more than both the Duramax and Powerstroke V8's. But this also goes to show just how tough it is built.

Message: thats what i figured, my friend's dad has one in his 98 ram, thing looks like a cast iron boat anchor. that would be a kick to have one in a rwd dakota though, one that was heavily modded of course.

Message: To cummins 5.9L swaps have been done that I know of. That motor is huge. The first was done by a guy with an RC dak. He had to move the radiator and pretty much everything else in front of the motor to the bed to fit the thing in there. When he was done though the Dak ran 13's in the 1/4 and got around 30mpg. The second is the Banks Sidewinder. They used a CC Dak. The back seat was taken out and the front seat were put in the CC. The firewall was trimmed and pushed back. So figure either way it'll take some major mods to make a 5.9L diesel fit.

Message: I cant remember what this dakota was called but I did see this dakota at the fall Oreillys Natls here this past OCT. It rand low 8's in the quarter and was an auto. But it was built by Dr. Performance in Fort Worth, Texas. I think it was puching around 80 lbs. of boost!!!!!!!!!

Not sure where you got your info for the Sidewinder Dakota, but it's not accurate. Yes, they did move the firewall back a little to help fit the Cummins in, but they did not relocate the seats into the CC portion of the cab, they still had a full factory interior on the truck. I've seen the truck in person at the Banks Diesel facility(did a tour with the DRTC) As far as other mods to make it fit, they basically re-did the whole dash to keep it looking factory yet allow for the deeper firewall.

Message: Actually I don't know the name of the site right off of the top of my head, but quite a few people have been putting the 4 cylinder cummins diesel in their dakota's, infact there is a whole website devoted to it... With pictures of how they did it and everything only they claim to get 40 - 50 mpg out of their trucks... Y'all might try looking through google or something to see if you can find it...

Message: I do recall a couple of years ago running accross a company that was converting their Dakotas to diesel for coal mine duty. They had a few new take out 3.9L Dakota engines for sale on Ebay. Not sure why diesel is better for coal mines other than it's probably the fuel that they run in the rest of their equipment.

Message: I would really like to see that site to.
I have the Isuzu sitting in the frame now and having an adapter plate machined for the tranny.
The flywheel on this thing is over 18" and sure fills the tunnel.
Has anyone seen a "tubbed" subframe kit for the Dakota's?
I have this cool little dually rear end that is the same overall width as the Dakota but uses a 26" frame.
