Message: KyleM, I have driven many 3.9 Dakotas. I wouldn't call any of them fast. And definitely not as fast as a 4.0 Ranger.
Anyways, if any of you have a question as to whether you can beat a 4.0 Ranger, then please come to Waco,TX. We have some guys here that run 4.0's with only a few mods (one has a K&N filter, computer chip, and exhaust) and runs a 15.10 in the quarter.
Oh yeah - - look out for ME!! I drive a Red "Splash" with a V8. Haven't been beat yet. The 5.9 R/T's can't touch me.

Message: Did I misunderstand or did KyleM say he roasted the tires at 25MPH and into 2nd gear with a v6?!?! I have no traction problems in my V8 at 25MPH and I am barely able to keep the tires spinning through 2nd from a dead stop on a flat surface!
What size tires are you running? How much NOS? Where do I get one? If I can get the fuel economy of a v6 and more power than my V8, I'm there!!!!!
Please tell me he's dreaming!! If he isn't I'm never going to drive my truck again!

Message: I raced a 4.0 Ranger 5spd X-Cab 2001. I have a 2003 SXT Dak 3.9 5spd reg cag. I beat him by half a truck length going up a slight hill. I had my girlfreind in the truck with the heat on. it felt great to!

Message: Sorry , to say but the 4.0 is junk ! My brother has a ranger with the 4.0 and its gutless ,We used it to pull 3 atv's and it felt like we had a 50,000 pound semi triler on the back! My dakota has no trouble at all.

Message: Never drove a 2001 Ranger 4.0, so I can't say what kind of power they have. From what I hear they are supposed to be pretty quick. Maybe the guy couldn't drive? I have routinely seen cars at the track go a full second quicker with a different driver.
DakTObasics, My roomate has a 99 Dakota 3.9 - we couldn't duplicate KyleM's experiences, so I believe he is dreaming.
Traction is a good thing - tirespin makes you go slower. So enjoy your truck! The V8 Dakotas are a pretty cool factory ride.

Message: Thanks Lincs93Splash...
I was just washing my truck and getting ready to sell it to buy a v6 ;)!
By the way...
When I was at the track the other night, I saw a really nice, late model RT running between 9.6 and 9.8! Is this pretty common for those trucks?

Message: Using the NHRA formula of multiplying 1/8 mile times by 1.555 to figure 1/4 mile times,
9.6 equals about 14.928 in the 1/4
9.8 figures out to about 15.239 in the 1/4
These are pretty good times!! There are not many vehicles out there that can break into 14 the seconds bracket! The Little Red Express in the late 70's was the fastest production vehicle (That's right - faster than the Trans Am, Corvette, and Mustang!!)in the years it was produced, and it only ran high 15's. (It is a full size truck, though) If this is coming from a Stock Dakota R/T, then it shouldn't be hard to run a 14 flat or even high thirteens with some basic mods, like a freer (freeerer?? :-)) flowing intake and exhaust, 180 thermostat, and maybe some underdrive pulleys and a computer chip.
Trucks are a lot harder to get to hook up than a car. Some 26X8 slicks with the above mods should put the R/T in the high 13's. There are VERY VERY few street vehicles in the high thirteens, EVEN LESS TRUCKS in the high thirteens. I run mid to low 14's right now, so I better get working on that 347 to replace my 302 to try to keep up with the 360 (5.9) Dakota R/T's that are bound to start making trouble around here!! :-)
A buddy of mine in high school had a 340 Dart Sport (like a Duster or Demon) that would run high 12's and you felt like you were being shot from a slingshot in that car, so imagine what a 13 second ride feels like.

Message: I don't know that the R/T's are that great, but they do have potential. Mine seems to do OK, but it's not as fast as my 93 5.2L was.
I just got the June issue of Truck Trend and there are a lot of performance trucks coming out soon that will blow the R/T's doors off.
I've got to get busy with my upgrades before 2005 gets here or else I will be seeing a lot of tail lights passing me.
