Subject: 4.7 motor knock IP: Logged
Message: I have a 01 4.7 dakota and the oil pump failed on me. I spent $400 dollars and for the next 3 days at 2 thousand rpm's the motor would knock...sounded like lifters but on the 3rd day i had the have it towed to my house and instead of the $5500 on a new rebiult 4.7 i bought a 95 s-10 blazer with 75,*** miles. I started up the dakota the other day and drove in down the road a little bit. It has no loss of power(i didn't get on it)but it took off just fine...like always...so its not a busted piston or anything really bad a don't think. The problem is prolly a bent rod or maybe valve train...i just don't know but i would hate to be out $5500 when its something little...i think its prolly shot but sense i have a better ride i just want it fixed somewhat for next years show season. I really miss my dakota though but this good dependable vortec v6 is good on gas and it is 1.90 a gallon. I almost forgot about the knock...its really loud at times...kinda like it will be loud for a while and when i let off the gas it will go away for about 2 or 3 seconds and then while come back again. Its in the top left side of the motor thats why i was thinking rod...someone told me valve train noise.

Message: IF the oil pump failed on you more than likely its a rod knock, the only fix it either to rebulid or buy a new one.

Message: Sounds like a rod knock for sure. Drain the oil or even take off the oil pan. Look for any metal pieces. If it happens to be that Visit www.KRCPerformance.com. We sell rebuilt motors with your choice of comp ratio and setup for around the the price of a new motor. For a rod knock, all you need is a new short block really.

Message: Just for my own clarification of the above problem. What exactly does 'rod knock'encompass? Is that like a connecting rod failure/bent?

Message: A "Rod Knock" means that at least on the rods has developed play and is slapping against the crank. Usually the rod bearing slips or wears out and the rods connection to the crank now has play in it. Basically, pull your oil pan. You will probably have metal in the motor. Most likely your motor is blown!!!!
