I have a 98 dakota rc short box and i plan on doing a swap. the plan is to swap a 318 out of a 69 dodge cornet. My question...will it fit, how much cutting, body mods, ect...and how will it effect my tranny and driveshaft? I plan on doing it with in the next year...just gathering ideas. And of course i wanna beef up the engine to fight off little pesky rides in my time, while keeping it look stock and quiet, aka a sleeper. input or past experiences would be very helpful...thanx!!

Im in the middle of getting ready to do a swao also. That 69 will be a pain in the ass but is possible, (everything is possible, kinda). You will have much better luck using a magnum engine from 1992-up because it will be easier to hook up the computer, wiring harnesses, etc. And will prob. bolt right in. Good luck

The wiring and computer are not a big deal. You are dealing with a different intake and heads, and the best way to go there is to go with an M1 to bolt the throttle body to. The wiring plugs into sensors that are installed mostly in the intake manifold and throttle body. It will bolt up to your tranny, no biggie, but if you're planning on doing all the computer controls, you will need to fab a pad on the back of the engine block to mount the crank sensor to, and you will need a crossmember to bolt the "LA" engine to, since they cannot be mounted the same way the Magnums are (Mags have mounting points in the lower mid-block, LA's only have the ears at the front of the block.
No body mods are needed, and the tranny and driveshaft will be in the same place. The swap is very much easier if you start with a Magnum engine, as has already been stated. Whatever you do, research this a lot more before beginning the swap.
