Has anyone installed a shift kit with their automatic transmission? Was debating about having one installed, but would like to hear any pro's or con's from others... Thanks

I installed a Trans-Go in my last 90'.It improved the shifting greatly. I install shift kits in all my vehicles to help extend trans. life, along w/ an external cooler.

I have a 1993 3.9L V-6, Automatic, with the Towing Option. As it is, I can easily scratch the tires into 2nd gear. I have even gone sideways a couple of times, but it was smoother pavement. I am also trying to decide if I should have my Tranny modified. I already have the Tranny Cooler so that would be one less thing to worry about.

Another thing. A guy told me that there is an adapter kit to hook up Chevy TH350 Trannys to Dodge Engines. Is this true?

I have a Transgo in mine, my only regret is that I didnt set it up for full race. 1-2 shift is still to soft for my liking.

Does the shift kit improve transmission life? I have heard that the shift kits are bad for the transmission. My tranny has 48,000 miles on it, and I'm sure its days are numbered.

The Trans-Go kit for Dodge trucks works for all Domestic Chrysler Transmissions 1966 forward with the exception of the 45RFE (1999-2001 4.7L for now). Special instructions and drill bits, are needed for 1998 and up 42,44 and 46RE electronically governed transmissions. Shift kits reduce the amount of time (increased application pressures) that clutches and bands are applied to reduce slippage and generation of heat. Kits can be hard on other drive line components, but no worse than power shifting a stick. I can't think of any transmission failure that I could attribute to a shift kit that was installed correctly. i.e kickdown adjustment and initial line pressure. If you overpower a transmission without a kit, it will do things like miss gear changes at full throttle, before or after serious damage is done.

Turbo 350? There are adapter kits to put chevy transmissions behind almost any engine. Mostly intended for converting to 2 speed power-glides in drag cars. If you want a 3 speed for racing in a Chrysler product look for a non-lock up 904 transmission from the mid to early 70's. They can handle HP and they are more efficient than a 727. 904 lock-ups can be good street trannies, but I have seen several with broken TC drive hubs at high mileage. Converters with stronger hubs are available. TH 350's are OK transmissions, but I wouldn't convert to one for a variety of reasons.

Jacob, The Trans Go brand (Summit, Jegs, and others) kit for Chrysler vehicles should work for your truck. The kit covers all 32RH, 36RH, 42RH/RE, 44RE, 46RH/RE, A-500 and A-518 transmissions. I think that covers all Dakota transmission possibilities and then some. RE's from 98-up require some special instruction from Trans-Go.
lil red dak, I believe that OD (A-500) trans were available in Dak's from '88-up.

What is a shift kit? Can it take the place of an automatic transmission? Would I be able to shift like a standard with a stick shift.

spencer, no a shift kit will not take place of an auto trans. the only way to keep the auto and shift it like a stick when u want and what rpm u want is to install a manual valve body, depending on what trans u have
