Message: An Open diff tends to supply torque (force driving the tire) to the wheel with the least resistance.
A LSD will tend to apply torque to the wheel with traction.
This is a simple response but it should give you the concept.

Message: What was that? A '68 Pontiac Tempest with Posi-Trac and independent suspension???
That WAS a great movie.
I especially love Joe Pesci as he enters the court with that zuit suit thing he was wearing.
"...are you mocking me son"??!!!

Message: tlc361,
Waht did you say? At first, it sounds wrong, but maybe you have something there. Could you explain your post a different way?
I understand the difference, that's why I ordered LSD.

Message: Open Differential:
When a vehicle with an open or a standard differential encounter a loose traction surface, it directs power to the wheel with the least resistance. The resulting action is the wheel on the loose surface spins while the opposite wheel on the better traction surface stands still or barely transfers power.
LSD:
Transmits equal torque to both wheels when driving straight ahead. However when one wheel spins due to loss of traction, a patch of ice, mud, too much throttle, etc., the unit automatically provides more torque to the wheel that has traction.
The above text is from Randy's Ring and Pinion website.

Message: good description. another way to look at it is this: i was at my friends house the other day and we all decided to do some burnouts. he has a ram and so does his friend. both without LSD. i have LSD on my R/T. when they did their brakestand only one wheel would spin. when i did mine, both would spin. both spinning means more fun and lots of fishtailing!

Message: Oops..You were right about a Pontiac Tempest, GraphiteDak! The crooks had a '63 "mint green" with LSD and independent rear suspension. Peg-leg on the Buick, of course, "As anyone who has been stuck in Missisippi mud would know".
