I had a flowmaster 40 series single inlet dual outlet installed a week ago. And now I'm not sure if I like the noise level. Would a 50 series or 50 delta be closer to the noise level of stock? I want it to rumble a bit and sound good on take off under HARD throttle. But this is loud under any acceleration. Even when rolling slow thru town or the neighborhood.

Yes, go to a 50 or 60 and you'll reduce the noise output. I had a 40 put on mine too. A little louder than I would have liked, but not enough to pay to have it changed. I even told the guy at the shop I was looking for something like the stock sound of a z28 or corvette, like you are saying, a nice rumble under acceleration. This is definately a lot more than that.

Roaddog, I have a 40 series on my 99 5.2 and when it was new it was very loud, I liked it, but it was loud. I have had it on for 5-6 months now and it truly has mellowed out. It sounds nice and smooth at idle, and picks up a bit under acceleration, then fades out again at cruising speed. In fact under hard acceleration I barely notice it now. Just my thoughts and experience, maybe just give it a while and then decide it you want to change it or not, can't hurt, maybe it will save you some dough ;)

Roaddog, I have the Magnaflow #14256 on my 04 4.7 Dakota. This was highly recommended by alot of the guys on the forum. Some members liked the sound and the performance gains that came along with it. In my opinion, this muffler has a really nice sound to it at idle, while revving, at highway cruising speeds and when you mash the accelerator. When I say a "nice sound" I'm talking in terms of having a smooth, rich, and mellow tone without any crackles or burps. The sound seems more refined than most others. Unfortunately, it was a bit too loud in the cab for me as well as some of my passengers. My only negative comment is that there is a slight drone between 1800-1900 rpms.

I called a Magnaflow Tech and he suggested I use the 6" round muffler Magnaflow #14616 as a resonator, just as CThomp mentioned. With this setup, I couldn't be happier. There is a nice mild-mellow sound that can be heard on the outside and a pretty much stock sound on the inside. When you get on the accelerator, you as well as others, can tell that you have something a little different than stock. Also, most importantly, the drone in the cab is gone.

The Magnaflow has a straight thru design that lets air flow a lot better, freeing up some hp. Just so you know, with the 2 Magnaflow mufflers (#14616 and #14256) on, there was no loss from when I just had the Magnaflow #14256 on.

I noticed that you have si/do setup. Talk with the Magnaflow tech for assistance. The oval 5x8 ss muffler runs around $90 and the resonator is about $60.

Thanks for the input guys. 99bludak, I think you just got used to it, the noise level I mean. Actually even after a week I am getting used to it, but every time my wife and kids get in..."IT'S SOOOOOOO LOUD.....WHY????????"
It drones at 65 mph in the cab and hits a tone at around 2000 rpm that hurts my ears. I really can tell the noise level once I pull in the driveway, sit for a moment, then turn it off. The silence is deafening.
I don't want quiet, just mellow and like I said...with a rumble at idle and cool when I get on it. The muffler shop will change it to a 50 delta series for the cost difference between mufflers. Not too bad.

Yeah, maybe I did get used to it, but mine was never as loud as you are describing. Not sure what the difference could be, but I am sure mine was never deafening. Hope you like the new one better...

If you don't want quiet then just get the magnaflow #14256. Don't get the resonator. The single muffler is what i'm running and it just has that awesome V8 rumble. But it sounds awesome when you really get on it. Flowmaster are loud because of the design. Its baffled, and baffles cause noise, plain and simple.

Mine may be louder in the cab since it's a Quad cab and the muffler sit about at the back wall of the cab. I'm not sure. But there are definitely certain RPMs that get very loud.

I just ordered a new exhaust system (headers, y-pipe, cat-back) from JBA so I'm a little anxious about the sound levels there. I loved the sound on their web site, but I'm wondering if it's going to be too loud for my tastes. I'll keep you informed. In the meantime, does anyone have any direct experience with the JBA system?

No sorry, the 5.2L. I splurged a bit. I've got about 100K on the truck and am replacing parts and pieces. I figured the exhaust was due. ;)

i have the flowmaster 70 series. I love it. It's loud on the outside. Very quite on the inside.

It's not loud or obtusive like the 40 series. Keep in my i have a wife and 3 kids. So, if it was too loud. I would have to listen to them complain.

I had a Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow muffler
S/I D/O in my 04 quad. The drone in the cab hurt my ears (ear peircing!!)around 1800 rpm. Hated it. Got a Magnaflow s/i d/o #12258.
Still has some drone... but is 100 percent better.
IMO...I think the drone noise is worse in the quad's.
Gonna sell the flowmaster!

I put the 50 series delta flow on my 3.9 and it was loud. After about 2 weeks the cops decided it was too loud so I eventually changed to the 70 series and now i love it. still has the flowmaster sound that gets noticed but i can hear the passenger talk.
