Post after the job is done and give some details with what was involved. I'd like to do this too, but I'm wondering how involved it is. I've done this on a Ford 8.8 and it wasn't too bad a job.

AAAARRRRRGGGHHHH. I got this LSD off the internet, and it is brand new (old but never used). I went to put it in - everything was going perfectly - then I test fit the axle to the carrier - THE AXLE IS TOO BIG! SON OF A Beatch!
I guess this LSD carrier is for a passenger car sized axle shaft. It will fit my pumpkin, but I need different axles.

Now what do I do? I can sell the carrier, it still isnt used, or I can find a passenger car axle and swap out the entire rear end (and put the LSD in that) . Of course that would give me a 5 bolt Chrysler patterna and open up a whole new oportunity for after market rims!

Anybody interested in this carrier? It will fit just about any passenger car (Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler) like a Duster, Volare, New Yorker etc.

You live and learn. At least I found it out before I took the original carrier out. At least also that I was able to change my wheel bearings and seals. something good happened at least.

sob

Based on this post and your other one asking about backlash settings it would appear that this LSD carrier is a 9.25" unit. This explains why it's too big for your current installation attempt.

If that is the situation you need to find an 8.25" LSD unit and start over...

See if you can resell the 9.25" unit and recoup some of your costs...

no, its definitly an 8.25, but the axle shafts on the DAK are too big (by about 3mm) to slide into the LSD carrier.
My thinking is that the diff is for a passenger car with skinnier axle shafts. when I did my 37 Pontiac a few years ago, I noticed that the shafts were straight from the splines to the bearing race, but on the Dak, they are thick at the splines, and are tapered towards the bearing race, presumeably for the type of driving a pickup truck is expected to do. Of course, that is a Pontiac, but he whole setup is identical to the GM version (using the C clips etc).
Not to worry though, theres a dude down the street who just brought home a 72 Duster with a 340 in it. I will mosey on over and see if he needs a nice new LSD for his toy.

I have learned something here and dont feel bad about it (hurts the wallet, but its a lesson learned).

I will now back off on mods for a while to recoup the lost bucks (if I can sell the carrier) and see what September brings. Who knows, I have a heard that there is a couple of used Garrett turbo's for sale ..... (will it ever end?)

Do you have a part number? I know the earlier 8.25" axles on Daks were 27 spline, then they went to 29 spline on the 97+ ones I think. Do you have a GenII or GenIII truck?

HOLD THE PHONE!
Are you serious?
I have a 98 GenIII. If what you say is true, I might be able to get older axle shafts that might just pop right in! Of course, what about the axle tube itself? would that not be for the newer axle, for the bearings etc. I like to hear more about this if you can give me more details.

98 Standard Cab, short box
3.9l,
home made cold air,
catback high flow,
V8 TB
and home made traction bars.

I think he's correct, it sounds more likely that is simply a different count of axle spines...
