Subject: LSD around corners IP: Logged
Message: I don't know if my LSD is suppossed to do this or not (first time i've owned an LSD, or a truck for that matter). When i turn corners, i don't think the LSD disengages, it sounds like both wheels are spinning the same speed, because you can hear one of the wheels not grabbing. Is this normal with LSD's, or is mine permanently (sp?) engaged?

When an LSD or locker fails, is generally becomes an open differential. Unfortunatly, you usually don't figure that out until you're stuck in the snow.

Message: Erik,
LSD's don't engage or disengage, at least not absolutely. They slip. An LSD functions by holding the axle to the carier usually with a clutch between the carrier and end gear. A locker like the PowerTrax will engage and disengage absolutely.
Either one will hold the axle when the traction is degraded like in rain, snow, sand, ice; that's why we put them there. The LSD in your truck will chirp and drag a tire in corners, especially if you have no load in the bed.
What you describe sounds normal to me. Alot of people find they can't get used to an LSD because they think it should feel/sound/function exactly the same as an open diff. They are different, they feel and sound different.
You generally can't tell the difference between open, LS or locker in a straight line. The open will be smoothest in turns but will leave you tuck very quickly in sand or on ice. The LS and locker will make themselves known in turns but will held you with degraded tractions with the locker being the best but bitchiest.
Hope this helps.

Message: an LSD can and will fail in horible traction conditions. I have a friend with a yota that has proved this multiple times.
