Subject: Oil question for Bernd IP: Logged
Message: Bernd, I have a 98 3.9 2wd Dakota with 58,000K( not sure what that is in miles), but was wondering should I switch to syntectic oil? The truck always had it's oil changed with convential oil every 5,000k. Would changing to syntechic now cause any problems??

Message: search VFR archives and texas VFR garage for tech articles and oil. On one of them an ex-mobile (maybe exxon) engineer has several VERY good articles. Or:
Yes change. Watch for leaks. If ever allowed to sit un-used for 2+ weeks, switch to semi-syn or dino oil.
No harm can come if all gaskets tight. FWIW, its best to run 10k or so on dino oil just to get good break in.
luck

Message:
You can switch over to Synthetic anytime you want. The myth that synthetic causes oil leaks is just that...a myth. What heppens is that the prexisting oil leaks have been "gunked up" by the regular oil. Since the synthetic oil also clean up oil soot and buildup, the leaks show up due to the synthetic oil just doing its job. No need to blame it on the synthetic, fix the oil leak instead...it was, more than likely, there already.

Message: I switched my Oil from Regular to Mobile 1 10W-30 Tri-Synthetic. (I think that is what it's called). I also baught a Fram X2 Filter. Is there a better filter out there than the Fram? Maybe one that is better and cheaper?

Kyle,
WIX can be found at NAPA and CarQuest stores (they use their names on the filters but they are WIX).

Message: I recently received a free dealer oil change in my 2001 quadcab V6. They put about a quart too much in. Did not notice much difference in oil pressure but I let out about a quart later and checked several times to make sure. Now pressure seems to be on the high side. Why?
