Subject: catalytic convetor dummy sensors IP: Logged
Message: The 1999 Dodge Dakota my son ended up purchasing, we found out, doesnt have a catalytic convertor on it. The previous owner must have removed it. Anyway, the check engine light comes on, and it deals with the emission control, etc. I was told we could purchase dummy sensors to plug into where the original ones are to bypass the problem, thus letting us get rid of the check engine light message. Anybody know where to find them?
thanks,
coadman

Message: Why not put a catcon back on? The problem will go away and the truck will be legal again. Guaranteed to work and probably cheaper in the long run.

Message: Someone up here showed how to make a homemade 'simulator' out of a capacitor and resistor - do some creative searching and you'll find. Also you can purchase prebuilt ones = $130 for two from www.thefastman.com.

Message: Bob,
We are in negotiations with the dealer we purchased this from, to do exactly that! It is against the law to sell one without the CC on it, apparantly they didnt know or look, but I'm sure not paying for one. I think I could get him in plenty of trouble if he doesnt cooperate, if I wanted to. In the meantime, someone had mentioned to me about the dummy sensors, thus the question. I had no idea they would cost that much.
thanks,

Message: coadman ... from your messages, I gather that the post-cat O2 sensor is still there, just no cat. This is the one that senses what is coming out of the cat.
Assuming that it is still in working order, there is an O2 simulator which uses just the heater element of an existing O2 sensor and sends signals to the computer to fool it into thinking that there is a functioning cat there. It's $25 including shipping to anywhere in the continental States.
I've read messages on another Dodge truck forum that it works quite well. A good buy if one still has a working O2 sensor :-) I'm not associated with the selling party in any way and have had one shipped to NY friend (just have to get over there to bring it back over the border). Fortunately, on the 97s, cat removal does always trigger a MIL :-)
Details and ordering are at:

Message: Coolness! - Dan's a cool guy, I'm returning his (though I'm sure a quality product), and he's only charging me the shipping and handling. I went a head and purchased the ones mentioned above (THANKS ticats for the tip!)- they seem reputable, and have tested theirs on my very motor/yr.model. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! Hope I get them soon,,,inspection is at end of this month.

Message: ticats,,
After I crawled underneath and looked at the truck, looks as if someone cut/disconnected the CC from just behind the muffler then installed a flowmaster exhaust system, which is just split into two pipes, simulating dual exhaust. Their is a sensor behind the muffler, so I'm assuming thats the one you are referring to? Still has wires going up front from that. If that sounds correct, I might have to check the place you mentioned.

Message: coadman ... on the 97, going from front to back on the pass. side, there's the exhaust manifold, a Y-pipe, exhaust pipe, cat. converter, exhaust pipe, muffler and then tail pipe(s).
The pre-cat O2 sensor is located in a bung on the exhaust manifold and the post-cat 02 sensor is located in a bung in pipe between the cat and the muffler (flowmaster on yours, Gibson on mine). If there is something that looks like a faily small muffler between the Y-pipe and the flowmaster, it sounds like the previous owner made a cut in the pipe and gutted (hollowed out) the cat converter and left it in the system to pass a visual inspection? Does the exhaust systen sound really loud (like the ones on the old muscle cars)?
The O2 sensor on/near the exhaust manifold is used by the computer to try and maintain a 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio. The one between the cat and the muffler is used to monitor if the cat is still doing its job. If the cat is failing or removed, it is this rear sensor that triggers the MIL and it is the one that an O2 simulator replaces or, in the case of the $25 simm, is used to connect the simm to. HTH.

Message: On this one there is manifold, y-pipe, exhaust pipe, muffler, exhaust pipe, y-pipe, then tail pipes. The sensor is located after the muffler, at the start of the exhaust pipe, prior to splitting and going to the two tail pipes. Looks like they cut out the CC somewhere inline, as the exhaust pipe is welded to the muffler. So, if I elect to use as is, it seems as if I could purchase the 02 simmulator, and end my "check engine light" problem?

Message: coadman ... from your description, I would say yes if the heating unit in therearmost O2 sensor is still functioning. This simm uses the sensor's heater element as opposed to other, more costly simms which replace the sensor completely. You will just need to splice it into the appropiate wires for the sensor or splice in at the computer, as someone on dodgetruck.org did.
I wasn't sure from your previous description ("cut/disconnected the CC from just behind the muffler") if the cat had been actually cut out or hollowed out. I asked about the loudness becausee a Dak with no cat converter is really loud compared to stock or any aftermarket exhaust systems.
