Message: 2001 Dakota (58,000 miles) with a motor that misses. This gets increasingly worse as it warms up. It has been in two Dodge shops, had its computer checked three times, had a through transmission check, had coil replaced as well as spark plugs and wires. Everyone agrees that it is missing but no one can find the cause so I'm turning to the people that know the most about Dakotas, the owners.

Message: Do a compresstion check. Unplug injectors one by one. By this, if there is one that does not change= bad injector. Listen for a sucking/poping in the exhaust. Take paper and hold it in front of the exhaust. It should be a steady flow. If it "pushes" the paper in and out of the pipe it could be a vlave. Last if not found; sink it in the local river.

Message: Due to the fact that you have replaced the plug wires I am assuming that you have either a 3.9 or a 5.9 engine. If so, have you checked the dist cap? Kind of common for the coil terminal to corrode and cause similar problems. Valve problems usually are worse when the engine is cold and at idle. The valvetrain problems I have seen have been a crack in the valve seat and as the vehicle warms up the crack swells shut. You may want to check your fuel rail for rust which may clog the injectors. If the tech at the dealer was smart, he would have checked and noted the fuel trim data while driving the vehicle as it missfired. If the fuel trim went high you may have a fuel delivery problem (leaning out) caused by restricted injectors or a failing fuel pump. Hope this helps and good luck.

Message: Check spark plug gap
at least .045 and possible .050 may help.
My 95 runs better with .050 - very little
in way of mods..
