Subject: Mismatched Tires IP: Logged
Message: Looking for some feedback - I have a '01 QC 4x4 w/the 4.7. Im looking to get some new tires for the beast- She currently has the 265/70/16. I want to keep those for the front due to rubbing issues if I go any larger but I want to go up a size to the 275/70/16 for the rear to get a beefier look and improve traction. In 2wheel drive it shouldnt be an issue but does anybody have feedback about the odd tires size and how it will effect the 4wheel drive? I currently only use the 4x about 3 to 6 time a year in the snow and to pull out of boat ramps, etc. The 265 are 30.7" with 676 rev/min and the 275's are 31.1 inches with 664 revs/min. Will this trash my transfer case or drivetrain? Any feedback or experience would be appreciated.

Message: BDASS,
You are asking for some real trouble by using different tires sizes in front and back. With the different sizes, your truck will be fightin itself whenever you put it in 4 wheel drive. The larger tires in back will try to push the truck faster than the front ones will allow. It may not damage it if you are on really slippery ground, but when you are moving you can assume 2 of your tires will be spinning, thus negating your 4x4 advantage. If I were you, I would just settle for some wider tires on the rear and keep their height equal.

Message: Will this trash my transfer case or drivetrain? yes absolutely,it would be like having 3.55 gears in the rear and 3.9 in the front, meaning the tires in the rear will be covering more ground then the front ones will. your name BDASS should be changed to DBASS as you surely seem to be a dumbass for even coming up with this stupid idea let alone posting it on the net so all your freinds and neighbors can see

Message: What they said.
Bigger tires do look better, no question. But they don't necessarily perform better. As has been said, it's like changing the gear ratio to a higher gear (lower numerically). So if you have a 3.55 in there now, a taller tire would change it something like 3.25'ish. It would seem like better traction because you'de be applying less torque to the pavement, and you would increase rotational mass and unsprung weight.
Traction is predominantly determined by contact patch. The best way to increase that is with a wider tire. Just look at any well built muscle car or street rod.

Message: I had a 4x4 years ago that had one brand of tires on the front and another brand of tires on the back. Even though they were the "same size," they were still different enough to mess up the 4 wheel drive. The transfer case was binding up and the truck would squirm all over the road.
NOT COOL!!!
If you have a 4x4, it is best to buy all 4 of the same brand/model tires... rotating the tires to help keep the tread even helps too
