Subject: Am I going to loose low end w/ 50mm TB
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 5.2 5-speed Dak with reloc IAT, FIPK, flowmaster cat-back, 19lb Bosch inj, black magic fan. So far my mods have helped performance and gas milage, I purchased a 50MM TB and I am ready to install it but I am worried that I will loose bottom end. I desperatly want to add to the top end performance but I hate to loose the day to day feel of the bottom end. Will this hurt my bottom end????

it shouldnt hurt your bottom end much if any. espically if you plan to get headers.. i asked a similar question about a 70mm tb (4.7L) and i think thats a little too big for me (untill i get more mods) i know what you mean about not wanting to lose your low end. i love driving in my dak, and theres nothing like torque off the line! i'm still getting used to it (i had a 3.9L)

hope i helped

If it does loose low-end torque, it's minimal. Unless you're running an intake manifold, and maybe some boost, the TB isn't going to help on the high end a whole lot either. I think my 50mm F&B *may* have helped breathing a little bit at 4000 rpm, but it wasn't much. Track runs showed that by itself, it didn't really help any. However, it will compliment other mods pretty good (Intake Manifold, Headers, etc).

Didn't hurt mine... like he said it compliments other mods great and is a must have if you intend to improve over all performance.

Hey it only takes 20 minutes or less to install one, what have you got to lose since you already have it. You gotta try it, you gotta.

sammydogs64, The stock throttlebody on the 5.2 is a 50mm throttle body with a torque step that reduces the opening to 48.5 mm. IF you have a stock throttle body you can remove the torque step with a Dremmel tool, just don't go be the throttle plates, if you nick this up it will raise idle speed. The throttle shaft can also be thinned. I did this on a 1992 5.2 Dak throttle body with a very noticeable increase in power. I figure that by cutting off the air horns, rounding the throttle plate holes removing toque step and thinning throttle shaft from 10mm to 4mm, I have increase flow on my throttle body by some 15 to 17 percent. The increase in flow is worth about 9hp and 15 ft/lbs torque based on Gtech meter averaging several runs.
