Message: What rear end do you have? 4x2 or 4X4? There is a tow guide on Dodge.com under the Ram truck that goes by either trailer weight of vehical. My 4.7 RC, AWD, 3.92 with tow pkg, HD bed capacity GVWR of 5900# has rated tow capacity of 6300#. I tow more than that periodically with a three horse bumper pull (7500lbs). If that trailer weighs 7500 empty its to much for the truck. Your tow capacity will be lower than mine.

Message: I looked up the tow capacity on the Dodge site. With the 3.55 grears its 4750# and the 3.92 its 6050#. That includes your trailer, passengers and everything else. Your combined rating is 9200# and 10500# for both truck and trailer.

Message: THANKS FOR THE INFO. MY TRUCK IS A SPORT PLUS 4X2 WITH THE FIVE SPEED AUTOMATIC. IT DOES LIST GVW AS 6010# UNDER STANDARD EQUIPMENT. IT HAS 16 INCH WHEELS, 750 AMP BATTERY HD COOLING AND A CLASS FOUR RECEIVER WITH THE TOWING PACKAGE. THE OWNERS MANUAL LISTS TOWING CAPACITY AT 6700#. I CHECKED THE DODGE WEBSITE AS YOU SUGGESTED, AGAIN THANKS FOR THE INSIGHT. TRUCK DOES HAVE LSD BUT CAN'T FIND OUT ABOUT GEAR RATION - I ASSUME IT IS THE 3.55.

Message: If you are going to play it by the book, the number you want to pay attention to is the GCWR, which is 9200 lbs or 10500 lbs for the 3.55 and 3.92 axles, respectively. When I weighed my empty 4x4 QC, it was about 5000 lbs. When loaded with 4 passengers and all their stuff, it is probably about 5800 lbs. With the 3.92 axle, that only leaves 4700 lbs for a trailer, only 3400 lbs with a 3.55 axle. Your gear ratio should be listed in the glove box. Also, the 3.92s usually have a "3.9" tag attached to one of the rear diff cover bolts. A trailer with a GVW of 7500 lbs probably has an empty weight of 5000-6000 lbs. So, technically, it probably exceeds the capacity of your Dakota. However, I'm sure many Dakota owners out there are towing in excess of their GCWR without any problems. It all depends on your comfort level. Some people won't tow a 2000 lb trailer without a 3/4 ton diesel truck.

Message: I was just looking on dodgetrucks.org under towing with the Hemi/5spd auto. Those guys are haveing more problems with downshifting on hills with towing than I've ever seen with the 4.7 5spd auto combo here. Apparently the hemi doesn't produce enough torque at low Rpm to keep pulling on grades. Sounds pretty odd to me. I think mine does fine pulling up to 7500 lbs, usually 6000. Andybody have experience with both?
