Subject: After 30 pages of reading... IP: Logged
Message: I've spent the better part of my last three working days reading through the posts here and on the general forum. I've learned a great deal about what I can do for my 00 Dakota 3.9L, and for that I have found this to be a terrific site for information on instructions. I have some questions, however, and would appreciate further input with my thanks beforehand:
-- Cold Air Intake
I've read about the K&N GenII, Z-Tube, Mopar and Volant. Which is the easiest installation for my 3.9? I have read on some posts that the 5.2/5.9 K&N will fit my 3.9, but I also read that K&N will be offering a GenII in the near future. What's the current word on that. From the consensus of people here, most love the K&N. Being a bit of a novice mechanic, I am a little intimidated by the thought of bending and moving things around (i.e., the A/C lines and cruise control), so I'd like to be able to avoid that.
-- Throttle Bodies
What's the best and easiest installation TB for my 3.9?
-- Exhaust
Same question. What are everyone's thoughts about the best systems out there?
I must say, I've learned more about upgrading performance by reading all of your posts in three days than I have in my entire life. You folks really know your stuff and I am thankfull I have found this site. I've only had the truck a few days and although I find the 3.9 to be an adequate power plant so far, there's no doubt in my mind it can use some modification. I've noticed that below 2000 RPM matched up with the auto tranny, it's a major dog on the low end. I'm hoping mods will improve my Dakotas low-end performance...
Thanks, folks,
David

Message: Hey Dave,
Welcome to the forum. I couldn't really help you out much with the intake because I have the older body style. I actually built a kit out of PVC pipe. As for the Throttle Body it depends, if your on a tight budget go with the Fastman TB's. If you pay up to $400 (like me) get the Flometrics 48mm TB. It was the best mod I've ever did. For the exhaust, I would look into getting a Flowmaster or a Dynomax. You should be able to get a lot of reading from www.Speedtweaks.net, there Bernd will explain everything to ya. He's the master of the V6.

Message: Hi, Kris...
Thanks for the comments. Do you have the URL to the Fastman TB site (if there is one)?

Message: David,
Send an email to Dan at fastman@mediaone.net
I believe that this is the best value throttle body. He is reputable and proud of his work and business.
It's a $250 exchange program. Is "stock appearing" which is potentially valuable if you have to deal with smog checks.
I will be buying a fastman soon.

Message: David,
Check this:
http://www.flipchip.net/dodge/airfilter_conundrum_part2.htm
This is commonly referred to a "home brew" intake on this site.
I will likely build one of these to save money.

Dan's website is: http://www.thefastman.com. He does excellent work for those on a budget.
You can also read about his throttle body at our website as well.
