Subject: Popping noise in exhaust? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I have a 93 5.2 V8 and I just recently put on a 40 series Flowmaster with dual coming out at an angle behind the tires. (which looks really good!!) Anyway, even before I got the exhaust changed, every time I reved up the truck, when the RPMs would go back down, there would be this popping, almost like a crackling type sound and I can't figure out what it is.
I thought it was the muffler and that why I got the Flowmaster, but it still makes that sound. What do you think it is? Could it be a bad cat. converter?

Message: Could just be excess gas bursting as it smacks down into the catalytic converter.... It's definitely going to stand out more on the flowmaster.... might have a sniffer test (aka a EPA gas test) done to check for excess gas not being burned on wind down....

Message: I had the same problem in my '93. It might be a sticky EGR Valve. I cleaned up the EGR Valve a bit with Carb Cleaner. Make sure you dont let any cleaner get on the rubber Diaphram which make it open and close using intake vaccuum.
Hope this helps.

Message: nature of the beast, you go with that wide open of an exhaust system and you WILL end up with popping. ever been to a 1/2 mile roundy rounder track and sit deep in a corner, happens all the time with race engines and low restriction exhaust, and the same with street engines and low restriction exhausts. only way to fix is a higher restriction muffler or adding a "resonator"

| That popping sound is normal IP: Logged
Message: It's the engine decelerating and the fuel being slowly shut down to keep from overloading the engine with fuel. My 01 Dakota has done it from day one. I too, wondered what the popping sound was too. You'll notice if you start out in first gear........rev it to 3,000 grand or so and then let off.....(has that cool hot rod sound)....and then it starts popping. I think you'll notice it more on the fuel injected engines. Nothing to be alarmed at by any means.
