Message: How much of a gain would I see from installing a 2 1/2 inch high flow cat on my 94 Dakota 5.2 CC? I plan on installing a high performance muffler soon after the installation of the high flow cat. The exhaust system is currently stock. Mods include K@N drop-in filter, K@N Extreme filter lid, ported throttle body, modified beer barrel intake (runners shortened by 1 3/4 inches),AR 3934 spark plugs, and MSD replacement coil.

Message: If you are planning more mods down the road you might want to just get a larger cat like a 3". Then you could use 3" pipes all the way back.
Other than that you should notice a fair increase in power. I did when I put on a free-flow cat. Exhuast tone increases some as well.

Message: I am also looking at putting a high flow cat on and didn't know if it was advisable to do right now, or to wait and do it later. Looking at CarSounds Cat. I have cold air intake, power programmer, Flowmaster 40 series duals. Going to do a F&B Throttle Body and Roller Rockers. Would I gain any noticable power and tone difference now, or should I wait until I have the throttle body and RR's on? Any other suggestions on what I should do? Thanks for any help in advance.

Message: It doesn't really matter when you do the carsound. You'll notice the power either way and it isn't like you'll lose any. You can get the carsounds on ebay for relatively inexpensive from an ebay store that is supposed to be pretty reputable.

Message: CThomp, this is the second Dakota I have owned with both of them being both 94 models and 318 engines. The first one I ran true duals on it. I left it up to the muffler shop and they used 2 inch pipe, 2 1/4 inch tailpipes, and 2 1/4 inch in and out Super Turbo mufflers. It ran pretty well, actually better than I expected. That is why for now I was staying with stock pipe. Dual 2 inch pipe is the same as a single 2 1/2 inch. Not to say that 3 inch is not better, I'm sure it would be, but I am taking it one step at at time to see how it progresses from one stage to the next. I was told that you could expect 5-8 hp from the addition of a cat-back exhaust to an otherwise stock truck. So, with the addition of a high flow cat and free flowing muffler to my current mods, I was hoping to see 15-20 rear wheel hp. Do you think that it posible? Actually, I was thinking that maybe I could get more than 5-8 since the truck had some many mods on the intake side of the engine from just adding a performance muffler. That I might have to modify the entire exhaust system to realize the full gains from the intake mods.

Message: The only way to really find that out is to put it on a a dyno. 15rwhp is possible.

Message: Yea, I would be curious what this engine puts out with changes I have made to it. It certainly feels a lot stronger than it completely stock. There are no rear wheel dynos in our area that I am aware of myself. I outrun a 98-99 Camaro SS with it once. He appeared to be running it as hard as it would go, but who knows.

Message: Give Marty at krcperformance.com a call. He'll give you the skinny on what cam would match your performance needs the best. I'd look into a set on 1.6 or 1.7 RR's as well if I were you. Those plus the cam would really open that engine up. Then down the road a set of headers. You'll have a screamin dak. Those GenII's are really light compared to the GenIII's. So they take power better.

Message: Hey S.Dave don't mean to burst your bubble but most camaro ss's are 13 second toy's unless the driver is asleep, I got's me an R/T but I give respect where it's due. It may be possible though.
A few years ago at Grand Bend Dragway (in Canada)while in the tech line this guy behind me had a brand new ss. He looks at my R/T and says "yeah I looked at them but there too slow". Well the air was pretty thick that day and admittedly everybody was slow. My best of the day was a 15.15 bone stock. I wached him shift like my great aunt, to a 15.54. Later on I just happen to run across him. My litlle comment to him "fast car huh huh, too bad the driver's slow". I had the last laugh. There were other ss's there that day most running mid 13's.

Message: Yeah, I thought about that. I don't know how much of driver he was to tell the truth. I am fully aware how fast some of them are. Some of earlier Camaro SS's ran a high 13 second 1/4 mile with a 5-speed. I think this was an automatic though.
I came up to a stoplight as it was turning red and noticed the Camaro SS in the next lane. It appeared to be a 98-99 model and there were two young guys riding in the car. They noticed me looking over at them and I was sure they were going to try to leave me behind when the light changed. 0-60 this truck will really go, but I have no g-tech or have any times from the dragstrip so I don't know how fast it is for sure. When the light changed, I heard the SS's tires bark as I took off. I kept waiting for him to pull past me, but he didn't. I would glance out the window expecting to see the hood or something. I think he was about a length to a length and a half back. I run it up to 85 and then let out on it. I was coming up on a curve and couldn't see what I was approaching beyond that point. He went past me when I let out of it like he was shot out of a cannon.
I have wondered though what would happen if we would have been somewhere we could run the 1/4.
