Subject: How I test out my new HO cams! IP: Logged
Message: Today we went out for a ride with our Quads. After we saw all the water and mud pits (it rained yesterday) we went home and dropped off our Quads. Then we went back to romp in our trucks!
My friend in his Nissan Desert Runner and my bro in law with his lifted Dodge Ram, both 2WD and I was in my Beastly 4X4 Dakota.
While were out we ran across two other Dodge Ram 4X4's and we romped together.
Here are two short clips of what we spent a few hours doing.
This romp through a water hole sent my truck to the rev limiter several times and you can hear it in the video. I am just running in 2WD for this feat.
http://www.paysonarizona.net/Home%20Videos/Mud%20Romp_01_ThroughTheWater.mpg
And then I got stuck in a mud pit. I turned sideways trying to miss a bush (you can't steer in the mud!). So I was wedged between two bushes and even with 4WD on at that time it took a few tries to rock it out.
Here is a short clip of me romping my 4.7 V8 to the max getting unstuck in the little mud pit.
http://www.paysonarizona.net/Home%20Videos/Mud%20Romp_02_StuckInTheMud.mpg It's cool spinning the front and rear wheels like crazy while hearing this beast rap out and getting a feel for my new HO cams!

Message: Thanks.
It does sound frigging bad a$$ in the videos. I don't get much of a chance to hear my own truck from the outside :-)
The video camera we have now is digital video and digital stereo sound as well. So it seems to give the truck justice for the awesome sound!
I sure wish I could get the rev limiter bumped up on my 2003 PCM. The engine hits the rev limiter near 6K while it is still pulling hard.

Message: Yeah. The 4X4 comes in handy. It's alot of fun.
And when I'm on the street I try to drive it like it was a R/T!!!
If I ever get a larger place and for some strange reason ever have EXTRA money I'd like to get a R/T for some serious street mods. But, It's not too easy to throw in the whole family in anything smaller than a QC!
So. For now I'll romp the piss out of my 4X4 QC on and off the street!!!

Message: Hmm...... Well if I can catch up on all my bills to have any extra money this summer I have two wants :-p
1) Change gearing form 3.55's to 3.92's or 4.10's depending on if I go up a tire size or not.
2) True Dual Exhaust. I want the benifits of the increased flow over my stock single with the stock (and I hear crappy) Y-Pipe. I just hope it still sounds as good as it does now.
And tonight I finished my latest project. A home made anti theft control circuit that does not allow the fuel pump relay or starter to engage unless you touch a hidden sensor each time you put the key to the "on" position.
I just had a company vehicle broke into and stolen. Looks like it went to Mexico! I'm not going to let that happen to my precious Dakota!
I still need to TEST it some to make sure it doesn;t spaz and kill the engine while I'm driving or anything. That would suck and I'm going to be making a trip out of town with the guys this weekend pulling a trailer full of Quads. I made the circuit board and put it in a project box. All sealed up with molex plug and all. I just hope I got it all right so a transistor doesn't over heat or something stalling my truck in traffic!
Here's a few pix. I don't get too specific because it's for my personal security.
Here is the wiring harness. I removed one of the pins from the harness and soldered in a new wire. It is hidden in the mass of wiring and goes to my control module I made.
This was my first board I made to test the idea.
I built a different one that is installed now.
I will probably design a new board on the computer and etch it out to look more professional and be more rugged.
For my work vehicle I'm working on a poisonous gas (Phosgene gas/mustard gas) theft deturent system. It's got to be clever so I don't my a$$ sued for poisoning some crook. But F*CK them. They play, they are gonna pay now!

What is your background for this kind of work?

Message: What do you mean a fuel cut??? Isn;t that what this is?
This control just prevents the fuel pump relay from getting power unless you touch the sensor.
After a while it will be like routine for me every time. But a typical thief would be screwed.
My background basically is some electronics education, and basically taking everything apart from radios to lawn mowers since I was 3 or 4.
I have a few hobies. Sometimes I come up with some cool stuff, even when I'm dreaming. But if I don't do it soon I forget about it.
Tonight I drove to the store. The control works great as far as the no start. But I have to push on the sensor pretty hard to get it to trigger so I need to make it more sensitive to the touch I think. I've got two LED's in my dash in LED holders. A blinking red one whenever the ignition is off to scare away most thieves. And a Green LED goes on when I trigger my anti theft control.

Message: I notice with the fennco on the stock box there is a flat spot when i press on the gas at 50 mph. Got a fix for that. I was think about running a two inch tube right through the fennco with a slight bend right up to the filter, connect that to a three inch where the old snorkle was, looking into the fender well, hopefully that will give a blast of air quickly when I step on the gas at higher speeds??? got any ideas?? That great sound comes from the fennco. I heard my neighbor talking as i got out of the truck. He said to his family, there it is that truck. I think he thinks it is a hemi, definitely sounds like a big block.

Message: As always nice work Graphitedak, great videos i need to start taking my camera with me. I was wavering on the muffler but i love the sound from that flowmaster 40 your running so i'll most likely toss one in this weekend. You can ebay them for 65$ atm... cant beat that.
Keep up the good work.

Message: BTW. we went for a quick trip to the Dunes in California again today.
While pulling my trailer with my friends quad and mine I couldn't really tell any difference from the HO cams from my old ones. But lately unloaded my butt-dyno tells me that they did help and towing I kept the RPM's below 3K most of the time.
Funny thing is when I got the cams I took my cheezy slide micrometer to my old cams and the new ones. I couldn't tell if they had any more lift than stock at all! The duration and seperation I wouldn't know by looking. But when I have used BIG cams in the past in Ford, Chevy, etc V8's I could SEE the difference in the cams by just looking at them! When I did old school cam swaps it was from stock to nasty. I know the HO cams aren't that different from my stock ones so I don't know what to expect by looking at them with a simple micrometer.
I got my final circuit board built for my home brewed anti-theft control. I installed it into my truck last night. The wiring that is connected to the PCM wiring harness is totally hidden. A theif will NOT be able to steal my truck unless they TOW it now!
I tested it during my trip today to the dunes. Each time you put the key to "ON" and then to start it wont do anything. Once you put the key to "ON" you have to touch a hidden sensor to activate the module I built. Then a GREEN LED lights up and you can start it. If you turn the key to off then back on you have to touch the sensor again.
This one is more simple and smaller than the first board I made to test (shown above in this thread).
.
I just had a company vehicle stolen while I was working so I'm not about to let it happen to my own truck! Maybe I'll get to catch someone TRYING to steal my truck and bash their F-ing head in? That would be a great pay back.

Message: You're right Todd, thanks for pointing out my mistake. Exhaust specs are the same for both, at .429" lift and 250 degrees duration. HO cams have higher intake lift (.472" vs .443"), but shorter duration (236 degrees vs 243). Just 18 degrees overlap.

Message: I just finished my cam / intake swap. Many thanks to GraphiteDak who posted pics of his install. (The power steering pump thing made things much simpler) I run mine at Gateway International quite a bit. Before the swap my best was a 14.84@ 90.18mph. After, 14.65@ 92.5mph. I don't think I have quite figured out where the power is, so It should go a little quicker. Mine would pretty much fall off at 4800 before, now 6000 still pulls. Will be making more passes Tuesday night, swapped my cat converter this week, we'll see how much more I can squeeze out.

Message: Great info. That helps a bit. I had written down the numbers that were etched into the HO cams but forgot where I put those. I was going to make SURE they were the correct cams after all the wait LOL!
But I am still pretty sure the butt dyno tells me I've got more pull form 3K and up. It especially wants to run into the rev limiter real easy if I hold it in each gear manually.
You should watch that video of me going to the water crossing in 4HI and listen to my engine. I think it bounces off of the limiter a dozen times before I get the chance to let off the gas!
Let me know how the new cat converter goes.
I've got only one on my 2003. I'm going to run duals eventually. Got to get caught up on bills first :-(

Message: Made 3 passes tonight. Best run 14.576 @ 91.4
I saw that video. Makes me cringe. I've lived too long in the big city. I can't imagine getting my truck that dirty, in 3 seconds. We used to have a cool place to thrash around in the mud, it was too much fun, so the county piled huge boulders around it. If I had somewhere to go fly through some mud, I'd probably get another. Looks like a great time.

Message: Yeah. Washing the truck afterwards kind of sucks the big one.
But it's worth it if you have a good time romping off road!
As for places to romp. I live West of the metro Phoenix area. 131st Ave and T-Bird. Where I romped in that video was 2 miles down the road in the Aqua Fria flood zone area or whatever it is called. Makes a close place to have fun with our Quads and occasionally the trucks too.
If I really want to get serious I go up North around the Payson area or Flagstaff area and go to some forest roads :-)
