Subject: I installed my HO cams. I got photos IP: Logged
Message: OK. I finally installed my HO cams this Sunday morning. Doing the project for the first time, I did it in about 3 hours. This included stopping to take pictures and then going to the bro in laws house up the street to get his saw to make the wedge took from scratch. I did use my air tools to remove all of the valve cover bolts and power steering pump bolts, etc so that shaved a good 45 min off of the job from using a hand ratchet I am sure.
I have all of my pictures shown here --->HO Cam Swap
Check it out. Maybe it will help the next guy.

Message: Hey Kowalski, thanks for the dimensions for the Chain Wedge. It was right on.
I was kind of rushed today after I did the swap. I had to go to my niece's birthday party. On the way there though a Grand Prix and a Altima 3.5 flew by me at about 60 or so. This was in a 45 zone 3 lane devided road.
So I thought "I'll test my truck with these racers at the next light".
So we got to the light and one lane was taken by some retired looking couple while the Altima and Grand Prix were in the other two. I got behind the Grand Prix. After the Grand Prix mis judged the light and nearly launched into the intersection before it was their turn I new for cerain they were going for it.
So the light finally changed and I let them go half way through the intersection before I got on it all the way. As planned the car with the seniors in it took off real slow while the other two flew off of the start so when I gunned it I got around the Grand Prix. The Altima had allready got ahead of the GRand Prix then turned. So at the next light I staged the Grand Prix to test. It was obviously a 3.4 or a 3.8 V6 to even think of seeing the tail lights on the Altima. So when the light changed I babied it a few feet to maintain traction then got on it fully. I passed the Grand Prix easily then I backed off at about 10 MPH over the limit. The Grand Prix then flies by me. The next light was the same story. I didn't get to run the Altima.
It's hard to tell but I thinnk my truck wants to spin the wheel even easier and has more pull as it shifts and more response when I get on it from part throttle. I wish I could get the 2003 PCM flashed or better yet get a hypertech for it. This 5800 RPM limit bites.
As for the racing on the street, there wasn't anyone to be seen. We had the road to ourselves and it was a devided road where no one could make any turns in front of us. I backed off at a reasonable speed but the Grand Prix didn't. I just wanted a test.
The real test will be the next time I pull my trailer.

Message: I drove it for a short while 1st. But we're just talking about a sam swap here.
I've never took it easy on cams on anything more than 20 miles or so. And I've had V8's that ran 7K RPM's. Pedal to the metal!

Message: GraphiteDak,
you get the gold medal for time! 3 hours!
If I was to do it again I could maybe do it in 4.
I went so slow... maybe 6 hours. I was really nervouse. My first time doing a cam, but after it was done I felt like the job was really easy.
I noticed the most right around 3k RPM, to show my friends the difference I would let them drive and have them get up to 3k at a normal pace then tell them to push the pedal all the way down. You can really feel the difference. (my buddy has the same truck without the cams.)
you can do the job fast enough you should put the oem's back in and see what all the differences are. I am sure you would notice more by taking them out, ("Don't know what ya got, til its gone"
well good job bro and enjoy the new cams. keep us posted if you decide to do the HO intake.

Message: No trouble Shawn; glad you got the dimensions in time - thought I might have been late. I was thinking you did it pretty quick too. You cheated, bending the AC lines - you can sneak that valve cover out without doing that; and getting it back on again seemed even more of a trick - but still, great time ! Sounds like you know what you're up to. Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes - "win if you can, loose if you must, but always cheat". I have no idea who said it, must have killed those brain cells long ago.
Doesn't B&G Chrysler or Kenne Bell have a flash for you ? I thought the Leach flash gave me as much power as the cams again.
kaui56 - the rest of the valve train was already broken in, I don't think there's much to hurt here.

Message: I think the 2000 4.7 is the only one with a flash, but not sure. Also, I'd really NOT have to send in my entire PCM!
These cams were easier than what I've done in the past with OLD school engines. Now the bro in law wants me to help him with his 318 cam. I've done those, but after doing the OHC it will be a pain in the ass to remove all his water pump, timing chain cover, etc nonesense!
And Jaggy is right. Taking it to 3K and then hitting it hard is where I can now definitely tell the difference!

Message: OK. My cams have been in my truck since Sunday. I have a company vehicle for work so I don't get to drive my Dakota much during the week. But tonight we were out and about. I had to kick the pedal down a few times to get in front of traffic and at mid RPM's when I kick down to pass it deffinitely has more go. So I can honestly say I can finally FEEL the difference from before. It was worth it :-)
A funny thing is it was just the wife and I tonight. No kids and we were just on our way back from eating out. It was raining again when we got out from the resteraunt. I got around this Eclipse and was stopped at the next stop light. I flipped it into 4-HI to show her how it hooks up in the rain. I slammed the pedal and it jerked so damn hard she could hardly hold our "to go" boxes and it felt like my stomache was left in the back seat. More so because I didn't expect it to hook up so damn good. I bet the person in the Eclipse sitting and spinning sh*t their pants when I did that!

Message: Thats the kind of traction you get all the time with AWD. It's very difficult to spin the tires, but you don't stay in the hole either. Pretty fun, uh.

Message: A GREAT job and pictures! I wish a had the guts
to do the same thing to mine. With my luck, I'd be
at it for 4 months and end up towing it to the
dealer to have them put it back together and rape
me over the coals!
