Subject: O2 simms - good/bad?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey Guys,,,,I need to replace my O2 sensors, and I'm pondering going w/simms instead - like from fastman.com.

My question is that why would I want to go w/O2 simms over the actual sensors themselves? I mean don't the sensors help to correct your air/fuel ratio? Basically is there any downside to going w/the simms?

Graci,

This is like a bandaid if you have a bigger camor things like that. If you put these in it will be similar to running in open loop. I would put the regular ones back in

Cool - thanks Piston. I had already bought some O2 sensors,,but still had time to return them. I'll go ahead and throw them in soon. Getting really tired of that MIL light, but my Tazzo hides it pretty well :)

ive been curious about this for a while.im going to redo my custom exhaust soon and do full exhaust with headers.is keeping the sensors going to be better?i have an 02 r/t,and lets just say soon its going to have cam,rockers,FIPK,M1,52mm TB.and HOPEFULLY in less than a year a paxton novi.would not having the sensors and going with sims be better for this?

and how would not having the sensors affect hp and fuel economy if so far the only mod is the full exhaust?

Is it damaging to your motor running w/fried O2 simms for a couple months? Would this make it run lean and if so how bad is this?

The simms are more for Drag racing
and/or super mods- which basically = Drags
Any street operation should have proper
sensors to set air/fuel ratios properly
and to verify cat performance - so that
computer does not go into limp mode
or emission failure mode
these usually reduce mpg and or overall
performance.....

OK. Here is the skinny on O2 simulators. In 1996 OBD2 became mandatory on all vehicles. With OBD2 the vehicle got extra O2 sensors. There was one before the cat as before, and a new one after the cat. The one before the cat is what the ECM reads to control the air fuel ratio. The O2 sensor after the cat is only used for the ECM to perform cat operational emmisions tests as required by OBD2. If you change the tune of your vehicle past a certian point or remove or gut the cat the the ECM will set a code when it runs the test. By putting the O2 simulators on you are fooling the ECM into thinking that everything is OK with the cat even though it may not be there anymore! The simulators will not harm the vehicle or affect performance in any way as long as they are used to replace the REAR sensors ONLY! They will then prevent a code from setting and turning on the check engine light. This is very handy if you live in a state that has emmisions tests that check your vehicles ECM info like we just got here in PA. Hope this might have cleared things up for some.

DougM-

Nicely put! I was just about to attempt to explain that very point until I read your post. Ive had one on my r/t for over 2 years now and it works great. Originally had a single exhaust with gutted cat and used it never throwing any codes.
Ive now got a dual 2 1/2" catless exhaust using the same O2 simm and it still works perfectly.
If you are going to be gutting the cat or swapping exhaust it is definately a worthy mod and will keep the "check engine" light from coming on.

What if you replace both? That just puts puter in open loop right?

Never replace the forward O2 sensor with a simulator. The ECM will then not be able to control the fuel delivery properly and you will either harm performance or damage the engine. Closed loop is better for performance anyway.
