Message: I'm an old geezer, my first car was a '68 GTX with a 440. Standing quarter mile: ET 12.6 @ 109.7 mph, factory stock. After some tweaking I could count on 11.7 @ 121.4 mph, and still drive it home on the streets.
There was a guy in town with a '69 hemi RoadRunner that could blow my doors off at any stoplight...
So what kind of performance numbers does a an SUV with a modern "hemi" get? I'm too old to understand why everybody wants to drive a truck... I view them as cumbersome, top-heavy and just plain fat -- like expecting a linebacker to return a kickoff, or win a sprint.
As I recall, the 426 hemi of yore had heads that weren't exactly "hemispheres" -- the term hemi referred to the intake valves being in the topside and the exhaust valves being on the "outsides" of the engine. This allowed smoother gas flow, and better cooling. The pistons were higher crowned, too for a higher compression ration of like 11:1 or something on that order.

Message: The suv numbers are only impressive if you look at other suv numbers. The new durango is heavier than a chevy taho (it is also longer). I have seen 0-60 numbers in the 7.5-8.0 sec range wich is impressive for a heavy suv. The truck can do 0-60 in about 6.8 sec (2wd reg cab) the heavier 3/4 ton truck can do it in around 7.9 (4x4). As for the heads the are in fact very much a hemi, but the piston is only slightly domed which results in a lower 9.6:1 compression ratio. Its still a pretty quick truck either way. If you want speed go for the chrysler 300C which does the 0-60 in 5.8 sec and 1/4 mile in around 13.9 (pretty good for a 4000lb car)
