Subject: is my truck tuff enough???

volunteered to rip out some bushes at a friends house. I'll be doing it later today. They're nothing huge, there about 3 ft tall and about 3 ft across.

My next question is, if I begin to spin and I can't pull them out in 2wd can I put it into 4wd or even 4LO? I know your only supposed to in slippery conditions, but I'm not really driving to far, and I don't plan on turning while pulling these bushes out.

I really like using my truck for what it was made for, but at the same time I can't afford to break things. My buddy works for sprint and his company truck is a decked out silverado 2500 hd 4x4 quad cab 6.0L. I know d@mn well he can pull them out, no problem, but this is my chance to play with my truck, and help remind me why I got the 4x4 package. At the same time If I can't pull them out he'll have to with his truck, and I don't want to look like a chump.

here's my window sticker, a little warning, it's a big pic and may take a few seconds to load.

If that's a problem here are some of the specs, 2002 CC 4x4 4.7L 3.92's w/LSD HD service group, towing package, and 5900# GVW

here's the windo sticker

you shouldn't have any problems. I did about the same job with my 1999 dak in 2 wheel drive and I have a V6 and 3.55 gears. If you start to spin and bog down then just drop it in 4 low. Dakota's are pretty stout and you shouldn't have to worry about breaking anything so no worries.

you should be fine. and yes, 4wd will be alright if you need it, if you're spinning, it is a slippery situation, eh... plus, since it's a straight line, there'll be no binding. i use my dak all the time (see "working the dak" in the raised board) they'll work, trust me =)

I've also used my '99 5.2L to uproot bushes...

2wd spins,
4wd pulls upto the stall speed,
and 4wd LOW snaps ropes!!

The truck is not the weakest link!

Use 4Lo and go easy & you'll pull 'em right out with no problem. I don't know whether you'll be pulling on asphalt or grass/dirt but as long as you pull straight ahead it should be a piece of cake. This is a situation where four wheel drive should be used if available IMO.

Yeah bud you can do it. I did it as well with a bunch of huge hedge bushes. These things were huge. Pulled out 7 in about an hour or so. 1 was really tough. I did it on my front lanw and did not really leave marks. I had my mud tires in. It was a blast. I know these may not be as large as what you are doing but I think you should be fine just listen for strange noises.

her's an update for all those who gave me confidence.

I went and bought some 3" x 25' 10,000lb tow strap and noticed it had started to come apart after the first pull, so I'm taking that back to the store tomorrow.

These weren't bushes they were mini trees, they were about 6.5 - 7ft tall and about... 3.5ft across (almost like a pine tree)
first pull 2wd spun, 2nd pull 4LO not only spun but kinda tossed my truck around. 3 pull got a little momentum and got into the gas just as the slack was gone and CRUNCH that 20 year old tree was out. Did the same with the second one, got some momentum and it was out.

I had 1/8th of a tank of gas and no weight in the bed. tomorrow I'm going to fill the tank and load about 300lbs in the bed, that should take care of some of the spinning. Yea we got 2 out of about 10 lol, it's all fun though.

I'll have to get some pics of the one that gave me problems. I almost forgot, it was on pavement.

Thanks guys for the help, man I love 4LO lol I might think about tradding the Dakota in for a ram though when they put the hemi in it. But for now I am very impressed with my dakota and and am soo happy I didnt go with a ranger.

btw... I didn't even try and dig them out first I just hooked up and ripped them b!tches out lol

i pulled out some shurbs for my mom in her landscaping, she asked me to help her dig them out, i said, BAH, we will do it the easy way, wraped a chain around it, put it in 4LO jsut for the heck of it, and jsut pulled, poped right out when the chain didnt fall off, this as a small one though, sometime this week im going put a boat into the lake and see how far i can sink my dakota, i jsut want to drive it in as far as i can without sinking the tailpipe ir getting water in the trnasfer case like some dumb previous owner did, one with the water froze in the T-Case and it was stuck in 4X4 for about 10 miles while the ice melted, i didnt not know this at the time but thats waht the problem was,
but the little shups came out fine, plus i saved my mom about and hour of digging
