Subject: rancho 9000 problem! IP: Logged
Message: i put a set of 9000's on my 2000 CC 4x4 about
4 weeks ago. took the truck about 300 miles
down baja over memorial weekend and this
happened: the top post on the right front shock
pulled through the mount hole ripping off the
top bushing and cap. the shock was siezed
and i'm not sure if this happened while rattling
around loose, or if it caused the situation.
however the same thing looked like it was
happening on the other side. i used the extra
parts of the seized shock and re-mounted the
good left shock adding a few extra spacers on
the bottom side. i drove her home (500 miles)
with no right shock on the front and it was
almost unnoticeable (the bed was loaded with
gear from 7 people and 3 of us were in the
cab). took the shock back to 4wp and they
replaced it no problem. i told them what
happened and they said i had'nt tightened the
shock enough. i have personally found that
these guys are less than all knowing when it
comes to advice. so my initial solution was to
add about 5 heavy washers to the bottom of
the post and then mount the shock. this gives
me about 3/4" extra length. these front shocks
don't extend very far, so do you think the
wheels down travel is greater than the
shocks? has anyone else had a similiar
problem?
again i drove on these shocks for 3 weeks
without problems, it wasn't until hells
backroads, potholes and washboards that the
situation showed. i also was not pushing
hard. this was all backroad driving, it would be
hard to believe that i was fully extending my
front end travel. if anyone else has a fix i'd
appreciate the info.

Message: I just got the 9000's and just went off raod with them. I did not notice this but I will see if I have any problems. I plan to go out and hit it hard again soon.
I do like the 9000's the more I change road conditions.

Message: forexfour,
look for tearing bushings and for the nut to
start dimpling in the cap on the top of the front
shocks.
i also have a question for you. i'm about ready
to get new tires for my truck (33,000 miles), i
have a hanson front bumper and would like to
know the real deal on fitting 33's. since i've
already trimmed away half my inner fender, i
have no problem with the trimming. my big
concern is in wheel travel, i use my truck to get
into remote places and do not want to
sacrafice that ability. please let me know of
any problems you have had, it will be a big
factor in my decision. thanx in advance......

Message: You will need to trim the back of the Wells. I have 3/4 to 1/2" clearance at the point which the tire comes closest to the fender flares. The 12.5 do rub the frame on max turns slightly. You may get a little rub on the well panels when hitting serious bumps at certain turn points but I have experienced very little rubbing. I will go with 11.5's when I have to replace these so I do not get the frame rub. I did have the torson bars cranked up almost full.
The safe way to go is 32's if the tightness in the wells is to close for you.
Hope that helps you out.

Message: am i the only one who is having a problem
with the length of these shocks?
i checked them yesterday and the left front top
cap/washer is dimpling in again. its only a
matter of time before it will pull through the
shock mount. and i have been driving on
pavement only.
anybody with the rancho 9000's please check
your shocks and let me know if you are
experiencing something similiar.
thanx

Message: I am still checking mine occasionally. I read someone else's post and they used the old stock mounting rubber pieces since the replacement Rancho gives seem smaller. I used the Rancho ones.
When I installed mine I did notice that if you did not hold the shock in place where it needs to line up with the hole that the rubber pieces secure to it seemed you would get the shock to push through. They need a bigger Rubber cushioning piece. That is all I noticed aside from making sure the adjusting knobs face out so you can turn them! DOH!!!

Message: Hey guys, what is the Rancho part # for the front shocks?? I ordered mine from Sam's offroad. The rear shocks were the right ones. But for the front they sent me a RS9019 and a RS99029. Both boxes said RS9019. But one box had the wrong shock. The RS99029 looks like the right one.

Message: I just bought a used truck with Rancho 9000's. I can't figure out the adjustment. Does dialing it in make stiff, out soft? Does the adjustment control only compression stiffness, rebound preset? The Rancho website was no help. I appreciate any help you have! Thanks

It sounds like the same problem - could the RS9000's be too short? How many people have the RS9000's without a problem?

Message: Yeah, dont listen to the mechanic unless you are running custom wheels with less backspace than stock. I am not saying your mech is not a good one if you trust him cool. Mine tells me stuff to and I trust him 100% but I still do things against what he says.
I have ran on fully cranked tb's forever. and after the Rancho lift and all the extra tb threads on the adjustment bolt make it so you can get allot more out of them. I cranked mine real tight ran it for a while then backed it down some. I did put on the v-8 tb's since the v-6's have thinner ones buy maybe a 1/4" or so.
Make sure you get an alignment if you crank the tb's. I have found that each side wil raise and lower differently. so 3 turns on one side may take 4 on the other or less to get the same result in height. Just measure before and after and do one side at a time.

Message: same problem here, thought I didn't tighten lower shock mount enough. Checked the lower bolts and they were bent and hard to unscrew. Went to home depot to buy stronger bolts, they seem to be holding up better, but still need to be tightened once in a while.

Message: I've had the Rancho 9019 on the front end of my stock F-250 diesel for about 4 years. They started rattling a few months ago...or that's when I finally noticed. All bushings are shot. The shocks themselves seem to be as good as new. They seem to be too long, so when they are installed, they are compressed without much piston travel, causing the truck to bottom out on the shocks. I'm not too happy about that, but overall they have given me good service on the road. The only offroad use it sees is on pasture land. I thought I bought them through O'Reileys. Now looking for replacement bushings.
