2001 CC 4x4 4.7L 5spd with 3.92 LS and tire and handling package.

Ever since I took my truck on a gravel road with washboard (when i still had the paper tags on it), my truck has had this rattle when i hit seams in the road or drive on rough pavement. It sounds like it is in front suspension and the sound and vibration is transferred up the steering column. Dealership says they "cannot duplicate". It only happens on a few roads in town (15 miles from the dealership). Of course, these roads are the ones I drive everyday. A buddy of mine also has a 2001 CC 4x4 just like mine and just took his truck on rough gravel roads this last weekend and now he has the exact same noise.

Does anyone know WTF is causing this noise and what it will take to get the dealership to fix it?

I'm taking in the truck to have another problem looked at tomorrow so any advice would be appreciated. The other problem is a clicking (sounds like a dry lifter) noise between 5 and 20 mph. It varies with speed so I'm thinking a U joint or CV. It isn't engine related. Any ideas on that as well?

This truck hasn't been abused, and doesn't see much off road stress.

Thanks!

I have also noticed a rattle in my front end. I am clueless. We have gotten out looked and checked everything we can think of and can not find anything. Hearing this make me wonder if I should dig deeper.

I hear ya. My Y2K has a rattle to it too.
I was thinking it was the problem ball joints everyone seems to have.
To check ball joints you just jack it up and give the tire a wiggle top to bottom right??

It's been making the rattle for over a year now so I wouldn't think it would be ball joints. Because with that much movement to make the noise, I should be noticing irregular tire wear or A LOT of popping when turning. I've only probably heard the notorious popping when turning like 3 or 4 times since I bought it. Each time I heard it, it was usually when the front tire(s) have a lot of weight against them, like turning to go up into a driveway at very low speeds.

The rattle almost sounds like the steering shaft or a loose shock. But I've picked it up and shook everything trying to duplicate the noise and can't seem to find anything.

Yeah, to test ball joints, shaking the tire while it's off the ground is the most common. Most ppl with Daks hear them start popping alot and replace them even while they still seem solid when trying the shake test.

I'll take the shovel Knobby!

I have also heard the Clicking noise you mentioned.
I just replaced my shocks and know they are not loose. I think you may have a good one though, Steering for the one but the clicking seems to come and go.

Up until I changed my ball joints out to the Moogs this past March, I was having that hiddeous noise when driving on dirt roads, speeds bumps, and bumps in general while cornering. However, I also noticed that when I engaged the 4x4 that noise dissapperd prior to the new ball joints. Try using the 4x4 and see if you still hear the noise. If the noise disappers when torque from the 4x4 is applied maybe it is the ball joints.

I don't have that popping or thunking noise any longer ever since I put the moogs ball joints on but of course mine is a 99 Dakota so take that into consideration

Do you (99Dak5.2L4x4) know if they changed the ball joint design from '99 to '0x? I have heard nothing but good things about replacing the stockers with the moogs. I wonder if there is an application for the '0x models...

Concerning the rattle, when I put it into 4WD the rattle was a little quieter, but still there. I also thought it might be the brake pads making noise, but it still rattles even when I'm applying the brakes.

I'm really leaning toward something in the rack and pinion. It just feels like the steering wheel gets kinda loose when the rattle starts. Hard to describe.

As soon as i heard the clicking noise at low speeds, I put it in 4x4 to see if it was a CV or U joint on the front drive shaft or the CV joints on the half shafts. The noise is still there and unchanged. I didn't gun it to see if it quit clicking under load because with the intake and muffler, the clicking would "go away" regardless :)

Hey Torque

I posted a thread in the Dealer recall forums about changing the ball joints back in March. I'm pretty sure the ball joint parts are not the same between the 97-99 and 2000 models, I remember someone did some research on that. None the less, the stock ones in all the Dakotas are non-greasable so it's a good idea to change those out to Moogs to get the greasable fittings. The stock ones go bad between 15-30k

You can spend about $200 for new ball joints and do it yourself or pay $600-800 for someone else to do them. Not sure if you want to go this route just to experiment with your problem though ????. I would go with your first instinct and get the rack & pinion looked at if your still under warrenty.

I use to have a 1995 Ram before my dakota and that had nothing but steering problems with it. It felt like something was loose in the actual steering column itself everytime I went over a bump. I practically replaced every part in that d@m truck and still felt the looseness. Drove me nuts so I sold it after six months....just venting here..lol

Yeah, I can relate to the venting. What good is a warranty if the dealer won't fix what's wrong? Or spend all your money trying to fix a problem DC knows about but claims as normal is very irritating.

I'm taking my truck to a different dealer about 45 miles away to see if they can offer any better service than the one close by.

Thanks for the info on the ball joints.

I have a 98 dak and I have the same rattle problem. I have replaced my ball joints and it helped, but not very much. I checking to see if there were any recals for my truck and found these:

19-04-00 JUN 00 Steering Column - Squeaking/Creaking Sound

02-05-99 JUN 99 Front Hub - Squeak Or Creak Noise

19-02-98A APR 98 Steering Column - Clicking When Using Gear Selector

19-12-97 NOV 97 Steering Column/Wheel - Clunk/Rattle

these are all service bulletins I found at ALLDATA. There are tons more, but these have to do with the clucking/ clicking problem.

Well @#$%... Just got a call back about my truck that I dropped off this morning. They still don't hear the rattle.

The clicking... they said it's something inside the transfer case. I had to take the interstate to get there this morning and after driving about 75-80 mph, when I pulled into the dealership it sounded like when you put playing cards in the spokes of your bicycle. They said they'd call back when they know if they are going to replace the entire thing or rebuild it.

97 Dakota CC - Rattle from almost day one. Two years later figured it out. The right bushing was very loose. It would only rattle on washboard type roads. Tightened, but then the other side loosened. Tightened again, and check regularly. Had irregular shoulder wear on the right side until I tightened the bushing.

The bushing in question would be what I would call the bottom back. If you reach through the wheel well and pull back the housing toward the rear of the well you can see it.

Hope this helps,

Murf

This might sound funny, but pop out your center caps and put a little silcone on them and put them back in. I found mine to rattle a little and make noise. I lost 2 over 20,000 miles, have not lost one since and one less thing to rattle.

Also I had bad upper shock bushings and the shock had a little movement and would slam around.

If those two dont solve the problem than take a look at the a-arm bushings.

Funny you mention taking your truck out on a gravel road and hearing these noises. My truck was fine till I went dirt bike riding just this weekend and had to take it on a small gravel road, now if I hit one of those drain ditches or something that makes my suspension have to actually work and do it's job I have a loud creaking noise, REALLY ANNOYING. I figure I'll just jump it 20 feet in the air and see if that fix's it next time I'm out.
