Subject: 4.7's DONT like water. IP: Logged
Message: My truck has not been running as cool as it used to before I had to replace my T-stat a week ago. Kept getting kinda hot. Knew it wasnt the t-stat because temps would go down as soon as I started moving. Finally dawned on me. When I replaced the t-stat I didnt have any anti-freeze so I just used water. Thats what I have always done. Was still some anti-freeze in the engine so I figured it would mix ok.
I figured I'd go ahead and completely flush out the system and refill with anti-freeze and see if that helped. Bingo. Cant make it run warm now. Word to the wise, for some reason, 4.7's do not like water. The coolant needs to be predominantly anti-freeze. Never seen an engine be so picky about the water to anti-freeze ratio.

Message: Come to think of it... I added some water in place of the anti-freeze when I installed my body lift. So far so good, but at least I'll think of that from now on! Thanks for the heads-up Hawkeye!!

Message: by theory of chemistry the difference in specific heat should make water the better coolant
oh well

Message:
Yes, water is a better coolant.. Antifreeze just raises the boiling point so we can run the coolant hotter without it boiling over, and of course keep the freeze plugs in the block in the winter time!

Message: I'm a chemist..water is a better, denser, way of cooling. But ethylene glycol (coolant) is there to prevent boiling AND freezing. Do not mix the two over 50:50...i.e. more than 50% coolant, otherwise the coolant will become gelatinous when over 200 degrees (or so), nothing will move thru you engine and boom. In warmer climates where freezing is not a problem and maximum heat density is required I would only use coolant at 25%. Coolant also has other properties that you need. Coolant keeps the waterpump seals swollen and lubed, it also has anti-corrosion additives. Straight water is a big mistake. Predominantly coolant is also a big mistake.

Message: i never implied a straight water mix, "now thats just silly," water will not lubricate and have the anti-corrosion properties of the antifreeze, and i didnt consider the engine getting over boiling point of water, *OOPS*, i ususaly run 50/50 in the winter then drop it down to like 30/70 in the summer, im not actualy sure what degree thermostat i have, anywho
props to DrDakota for having the pateints and interest to be a chemist, its just not my bag,
maybe its the fact i took a chem class that was way too advanced for me and got a not so good grade and hated it since, oh well, i better try again

Message: All I know is with a mostly water mix, this engine gets hot. With a couple gallons of antifreeze, it stays significantly cooler.

Message: Just a quick follow up, forgot to mention that under pressure of your radiator cap (usually 12-15psi, don't know the exact spec for my dakota)water will not boil at 212 degrees (thats boiling point for standard pressure at sea level) it will easily go to 250 degrees without boiling. Just a little physic to keep in mind when doing temp/t-stat changes.

Message: solution, get enough pressure to run the water up to about 350 degrees and a 180 thermostat, you may need a larger radiator and some stronger hose clamps and stuff, then you get a pressure cooker built into your dak
i dont know why your mostly water thing didnt work so well with the temp, the BP should have been well over 270 degrees witht he small amount of antifreeze from the engine in there, so i dont think it was a problem of the water turning into steam or boiling, at any rate, it didnt like it so dont do it again

Message: the drain plug is a plastic screw head on the bottom of the radiator. about1/4 an inch and plastic. It doesn't work real well. when I changed my t stat most of the coolant came out when I removed the bottom radiator(tstat housing) from the block.
you alos have to blead the system to avoid getting air in the coolant and causing it to overheat. this is a large alen head bolt on top of the block near the battery. upper radiator hose runs up to it.

Message: My son's 2001 Dakota 4.7 is boiling over after a 1 hour highway drive.
It seems it is pumping coolant into the overflow reservoir until it nearly empties the rad.
What do you think is going on?
And where is the thermostat on this thing?
Thanks.

Message: Ron - obviously his truck is overheating, but you'll need to check several things to find out why - low on coolant ? bad waterpump ? belt slipping ? radiator internally clogged, or outside surface blocked ? (might have to check this with a heat sensor) bad thermostat ?...
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: The thermostat is on the engine end of the lower radiator hose. It's inside the plastic piece the hose is attached to.

Message: Just a point I feel the need to make. 50/50 is good to about 35 or so below. Where I live 40 below is common here and there every winter. I have seen 55 below and 50/50 does not cut it. things don't break but a 50/50 mix will slush up and boil your engine. I run 60/40 and I have never had a problem, summer or winter.
So many problems .... So little time
