Subject: question on differentials IP: Logged
Message: When ordering the weight capacity upgrade on a new Dakota, one finds that one must also order a "limited-slip differential". I understand what one of those *is*, but I *don't* understand just what it would have to do with increasing the load capacity of the truck.
Would anyone care to enlighten me? And thank you for your time/effort.

Message: It might not "help" the truck carry more, but I have two ideas.
1. I don't have one on my dakota, but when I got a new rear end for my fullsize bronco, I got one because the shop said certain models make the diff assembly stronger. I won't know till I do some reasearch though.
2. You will have more control while pulling on a wet or loose road surface, and dodge might have it a a saftey item.

Message: Don't rightly know either as to why it is required. I do know that it does NOT gain you more "control" on wet/ loose surfaces. Have you broken both tires loose on a wet or loose surface before? That a$$ end is anything but under better control.
It may be a more durable component(ie;wear) since you don't always have one wheel/axle doing all the work. The rear end itself is still the same size physically.

Message: I may be wrong but I assume that the reason the LSD comes with the wieght capacity upgrade is because most people get this option to tow a boat and the LSD would help getting the boat up the wet ramp..
just my $.02 worth.....

Message: It has NOTHING to do with load capacity. It has to do with limiting the options. Manufactureres have to limit the combinations of options, even if it is custom ordered, because if you could "order anything you wanted" they would have to support literally hundreds of millions of combinations. The assembly line and Q/A just can't handle that.
I'm sure there is a math wizard out there that can count all of the options on a Dakata and factor the total number of combinations if they were allowed.

Message: Guys .. if you think about it.. When your pulling something you only have a small weight pushing down on the back tires to keep them glued to the ground before they start to spin. With out LSD you only have one wheel trying to pull your truck and the load you have. It's easier to loose traction that way. If you had both wheels turning then it would split the force needed to get you and your load moving. Making you able to pull more. Also for $40 it's well worth the investment even if you aren't pulling anything.
Good point about the wet boat ramp. You already have less traction because of the water. Plus your trying to go up a hill. Have you guys ever watched and seen people peel out trying to get up that?
