Hmm.. guess..it's my time to add to the post...
Since I have noticed that everyone who has had something bad to say about them DON'T have them on there truck, have only word of mouth experience, or a few with experience with them on another vehicle (aka JEEP...with 1/2 the weight of a Dakota...) Im not sure you all have a right to say something bad about them when the ORIGINAL post was about them on a DAKOTA...
Since I HAVE them on my Truck...and I HAVE been driving on them for the past 1200 miles... I will tell you this.
-On cold mornings, there is a bit of "un-roundness" due to the size of the tires. After a few miles, they are warm and round out very nicely.
-On Road Handleing...
00-30 mph, they are "prety quite"
31-60 mph, they are moderatly loud
over 60mph, they have a nuce hum, but nothing the radio (or my case, exhaust) can't drone out.
They do have a slight "float" when traveling down the road...but that has to be expected with any large off-road tire.
Off Road Handleing...
WOW...very impressive. Kinda dissapointed in the fact that I don't need 4wd all the time now. Makes short work of most mud holes.

If you are looking for a great off-road tire, your not going to find a tire that is truely quiet like a radial. Its just not going to happen. There are some things you are going to sacrifice with the gain off off-road performance/traction.
There is my $0.02...well more like $0.06, but whos counting anyway...

Ok, YJ did it...
I love my Goodyear Wranglers too. they are the best. Highways, hardpacked beaches, roads, streets, dirt roads, gravel roads-oops, actually, I've had 4 flats in less than a year from gravel roads alone. Other than that, they are bulletproof.
~pulls out gun...~ bang bang...well, maybe not, but they seem to like being flat anyway.
Time for some BFG Mudders. Had a set once, and loved them...going back for more too.

Yes, Dakota, nice truck. I would have to say I somewhat appreciate word-of-mouth. More info the better, so I can make a sound decision.
Oh, and FYI, my YJ weighs a lot more than 2500lbs. ; ) Heavy duty skid plates, nerf bars, grill guard, tail guard, 33X12.5" BFG muds (qty.5), multiple KC's, custom subwoofer box, amps, roof rack, borla header and exhaust, oh and a couple of real heavy stickers ; ), bring it closer to a club cab truck weight than you may think. ; )

One more thing... you wheelers better not be siping(sp?) your darn mudders. You'll run 'em down pretty quick. Don't listen to what the tire shops are trained on. Listen to what wheelers say. ; ) Think about it, cut some slabs in the sole of your shoe and let us know when you need to pick up a new pair. ; )

I have heard that thornbirds like to chunk lugs and that they dont grip unless youre in ruts because of insuffitiant spaces in between treads
just my 2 cents

I find it funny that i hear all bad stuff about the thornbirds, but dakota gives us a good review. I'll take his word over anyones anyday since he drives my truck :)
Just might go for a pair of those thornbirds after my bfg's retire.

i had a set of thornbirds on my fullsize '89 bronco. i'll be the first to tell you guys that this is by far the coolest looking freekin' tire around. my experience with the thornbirds on the bronco wasnt that great. ok, so it weighed less than my QC dak, but in my experience, they sucked in the rain. also, since my bronco wasnt that well insulated for sound, the hum was annoying over 40mph. but when i hit the trails or the the snow covered streets...they just couldnt be stopped. i still have them...maybe i should buy a set of 15" rims and give them a try on a quieter, heavier vehicle.

I really don't know anything about the Thornbirds except that they look cool. I thought about getting a set. I have a stock 98 Durango and have a set of 32x11.5x15 BF Goodrich AT KO on stock aluminum wheels and would recommend them highly. They are very quiet on the interstate and I travel in the Durango for a living. About 1000 per week. They seem to last forever too. They work fantastic on and off road. The only complaint I have is they suck when trying turn on snow covered roads. They seem to not want to turn at all. I think they need one more lug on them somewhere to stop this problem. Does anyone know how the mud terrains are for wear and how loud they are on the highway? I would like to add a 3 inch body lift and put on 10 inch rims with 33 inch mud terrains.

I also love BFG AT's, the mud terrains are good in the mud worse in the snow than the AT's Which i love on my truck in the snow, but will go through some stuff...

I had a set of thornbirds on a 95 nissan cc, it was unstoppable in the mud and snow, but on pavement it sounded like a helicoter flying in the bed of the truck. They were awesome I loved them!! now I have a '01 QC thinking of putting a set on it.Am I going to need a body lift?

I was thinking about getting a set of thornbirds for my 96 chevy z71. But i'v heard that they don't ride very good on the road and that they vibrate,and shake the hell outta your truck. Everyone says they look kickass but there a bad tire for your truck..is that true???????

I had a set of 33 x 12.50 x 16 on a '77 Chevy 3/4 ton. As for them cleaning, you won't have a problem with it as long as you got the gears and tire speed in the mud to keep them clean. Yes, they are an AT tire, however, I have never seen another AT tire throw the clods of mud these will!!! I did the old "pull your buddy out in 2wd" bit on a friend of mine in his CJ-5 and he told me his windshield flexed every time a clod hit it. When it was said and done and I finally decided to pull him out, he had about 3 inches of solid mud on the front of his Jeep. As far as there performance in the rain, I haven't had an oversized tire yet that did real well in the rain, I ran Coursers for a while as well as Mud Campaigners both radial tires and they still sucked in the rain.
As for the wear, they wear really good. Mine had around 10,000 miles and still had close to 3/4 tread. Ride and handling, the dual belted design makes for great handling, and excellent ride, but you can't expect a jacked 4x4 to ride like a cadillac to begin with no matter what kind of tires you got. If someone had vibrations and rattling going on, then they have some malfunctions with there equipment, not the tires!!!
Over all, I think the fact they are in the Super Swamper family, hurts this tires reputation. They have been expected to perform like all Swampers mud tires and have came up a little short, although they do hold there own really well.
Like mentiond they are and AT tire and blow away the competition. I have also recently order a set of 38 x 14.50 x 16.5 for an '83 Chevy 3/4 ton.
