I have a set of 33" xterrains. They look awesome. If yer looking for a comparison. 4wheel magazine did a test between the top 5 tires. You should search the threads because i know someone wrote something about the test.

If you want good looks, ride quality, functionality and a moderate amount of road singing between 35-50mph, go with the Xterrains:)

The January 2002 issue of Four Wheeler magazine had a review of 6-tires(pulled from my trusty archives): The Mickey Thompson Radial Baja Claw had the most "thumbs-up" overall and scored a 5 out of 5 "thumbs-up" in all catagories(mud, rocks, sand) except for street where they gave 4 thumbs-up due to it's ok road manners and above-average road-noise that equaled Interco Boggers(also tested).

The MTR's took 4 thumbs-up in categories mud, sand and street while getting 5 thumbs-up for rocks where they raved about it's rock capabilities and overall performance.

The Xterrains were given 5 of 5 thumbs-up for the categories rocks and street. 4 thumbs-up for sand and 3 for mud. It was noted that they did not get to test them in the mud hence they gave it a middle of the road score. From the testimonial's I have seen on this website, I am guessing they perform as good as the MTR's. Hawkeye, if anyone can vouch for there off-road ability in varying terrains.

I got my Xterrains last year after seeing them in a magazine(wanted them) and then coming accross this website and seeing Hawkeye's truck with them on which looked bad-ass(had to have them). I just finally put them on once winter broke and all I can say is the best mod to my truck so far next to the lift and flowmaster exhaust:) Everyday I notice people staring at my tires, hmmm... does he race that truck in the Baja 500 or just look like it?

Sand - Excellent.
Dirt - Excellent.
Rock - dont have any here.
Hard sun dried clay that feels like rock - excellent.
Mud - good to very good.
On road - Excellent for an aggresive off road tire.

The only reason tey arent better in mud than they are is because the tread lugs are a bit closer together than your average mud tire. They can hold their own though, you just have to be mindful of their characteristics. Lots of people think they are mud tires which they are not. THey really are a hyper-aggressive all terrain. Hence their ability to do so well in so many environments. Would I put them on a truck that will see serious mud as 80% or better of its off roading time, no. But for a truck that will see lots of different terrains, I dont think they can be beat. The BFG MT's are still my #1 choice for a daily driver that see's lots of mud. I think the Goodyear MT/R's are in between XT's and BFG MT's. Their tread lugs are more open than XT's but a bit closer than BFG MT's.

Wheel size. BJ has 16" wheels Hawkeye has 15" wheels. The overall size ends up being the same it's just the hole in the middle that's a differen't size.

15 inch rims have been the standard for years. Its only been in the past 5 years or so that trucks started coming with 16 inch rims. The idea is to improve the ride. Tires for 16 inch rims have less sidewall area than the same size tire for a 15 inch rim. Hence less sidewall flex, which gives a firmer ride and better cornering, etc. Off road, you WANT sidewall. More side wall protects your rims, lets the tire wrap around objects to get better traction, etc.
