Subject: New Tires?
IP: Logged

Message:
has anyone had any experience with Mickey Thompson baja belteds, or BFG all terrains? I am almost ready for some new tires, but I'm noy sure what to buy. Since most of my miles will be spent driving on road which will be about 75%, I need something that will wear decently. now I have 32X11.50 Dunlop Mud Rovers, but after 15,000 miles they are almost bald, I relly like the tires, but I need something that will last a little longer. Thats why i am considerinng either the mickeys or the BFG All Terrains. So if you have experience with either, your help will be appreciated.

I've run 31x10.50 BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A's for about 18 months now (~16,000 miles). They still have a significant amount of their tread left (~75%...doing 5-tire rotations every 3,000'ish miles). No significant complaints to date. I've done some decent off-roading with them, and they've done pretty good.

I'm currently entertaining the thought of getting a second set of tires (mud terrain 32x11.50's) & rims so that I can indulge my "messier" side. That way I can maintain a more streetable tire, and yet still go play in the "gumbo" from time-to-time!!

Suggestion.. Look at the GoodYear AT/S's I loved those tires when I had them on my Ford. Only reason I'm not running them right now is because I only have one set of wheels and my muds are on those.

They actually got better raitings then the BFG's.

About the Micky Thompsons.. ALL there tires wear FAST on the road. Soft rubber great for off-roading.. Get all kinds of torn up on the road.

A second set is the way to go. I wish I could run the 33" tires all the time but it would cost me a fortune in rubber. The commute of 350 per week.
I have 2 sets of mud tires mounted 31" and 33". I still have my stock tires but nothing to mount them to. When I run the 31" down I am going to get some type of All Terrain but I do not know which one. I have also thought of getting a third set of really cheap rims and staying with 31" and 33" Mudder's and AT's maybe 32"'s.

I could use help deciding what kind. Something agressive looking.

How much more noise and vibration in the MT/R's versus the AT/S. I'm still debating on tires. My lift is here though so time is running out on my decision. I'm currently looking at BFG A/T's and the GY AT/S and also Dunlop Rovers. I'm not sure if I want to step up to the MT/R because I only go off road on occasion but I love the way they look and have heard they kick A$$ offroad.
I just don't want the teeth shaking vibration and steering wheel pulsation I've experienced with BFG and Dunlop mud tires.

Oh and another thing...
I was watching 4x4 TV last night ( I Love That Show) They were covering an extreme offroad event with "sniper" type vehicles and heavily modified jeeps. The usual bada$$ offroad vehicles with spotters to guide over obsticals. Most were running 35" MT/R's, in fact all but 1 were running the MT/R's. Impressive

Corey, Go with the BFG AT's. AT/S are nice, but the BFG's just do a bit better off road. I have used both. I have a set of almost new 32x11.50-15 AT's for sale if your interested in a set of 32's.

Corey, if you do alot of road miles I would suggest going with the All Terrains over the Dunlop Rovers. The Dunlops ride kind of ruff and are pretty noisey.

Knobby, do they make the Good Years in 33's or just 32's.

If it wasn't for my Shaker hood project (next week...woooohooo!!!!), I'd be at 4-Wheel Parts buying a my second set of tires. I'm definitely thinking the dedicated off-road rubber will be a set of black rock crawlers wrapped in MT/R's (32/11.50R15 on 15x8" for $974+tax).

I've heard nothing but praise on the MT/R's. The major off-road mags worship them, and there have been some rave reviews on some of the other forums I frequent.

Check this link:
http://www.rit.edu/~jlh6340/Offroading/default.htm

He belongs to the Durango Owners Club, and posted this a little while back. Apparently, he got stuck on his first run, but after some assitance getting backed up, he was able to claw his way through the rest. On his second attempt, he made it through with no problems. That speaks a lot about these tires.

I just put a new set of 32\1150\15 BFG Mud Terrain KM's on my truck and I have to say WOW. Not only do they ride nicer than my last tire (Discount tire Pathfinders) but they are also QUIETER!! yes thats right they make less noise than the pathfinder!! shoot I almost wish they made more noise. I havent had the chance to take them offroad yet but I'm sure I wont be dissapointed there

I just got the BFG's AT's 33x12.5 about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and I love them. They look great, they drive smooth, they're quiet, and they handle pretty good of the road(mostly dirt and rock trails for now). I've put about 2000 miles on them, and I can't complain. I commute about 90 miles a day, and offroad about once a month, so these tires work out great for me. They're mild enough for the commute, and tough enough for the offroad. Eventhough there's a big differrence in tread pattern from the MT's, these tires will still make it to alot of the same places.
