Message: I second it...Knobby's right, all you lucky enough to have the Dana 35 have a ton of gear mods available to you while we 2000-2002 have to deal with only 3.55 or 3.92s. You have lockers available too.

Message: Is new front diff in the 2000+ dakotas the chrysler corporate 8.25 inch or something else? If it is, then I believe ARB makes an airlocker for it.

Message: 4wDakota.. Just about EVERYONE makes stuff for the Dana35. I'd go w/ a ARB air locker for the front. Nice High Quality and very effective.

Message: I don't think they make one for the dakota Dana 35. I think its only for the Jeep Dana 35. Isn't there a difference between the two? I think the splines are different.

Message: The Dana 35 Dakota style doesn't have an air locker yet. The 8.25" rear finally has one though. Again, I saw it in Peterson's mag. Just awaiting $$$. I don't know what I want for the front yet.

Message: I have asked this before and got no response so I'll try again.
Does the front differential stay engaged all the time? In other words the differential is always connected to the CV joint. If it does then I wouldn't want to run a locker in the front because of all the stress it would add. In a turn the front wheel speeds vary from left to right even more than the rear wheels do.
This is why I think the only way to go would be a elocker or air locker.
Can anyone confirm the setup of the front diff. and any selectable lockers available

Message: Corey,
The front axle shafts spin all the time. Only gets power when the transfer case gets put in 4WD. That's why we can shift on the fly. I had never thought about it until two days ago when talking to the guy who installed my gears. The way around this would be to install manual locking hubs, but that would kill the shift on the fly feature unless you ran it locked all the time.

Message: Yeah, the chevys have a clutch system in the front diff (I think) that disconnects in 2wd so the t-case and diff are disconnected. Thats why you can run a regular front locker on them.
So, who makes a selectable locker ARB, elocker, something????
Corey
BTW Dan- I've heard that trying to change the front hubs on these trucks would be a nightmare, all custom stuff. I wish manual hubs were an option like they are on Toyota. My friend has one and he just engages them when he thinks he might have to use 4wd. He has the option of disconnecting them on road though which keeps the CV joints from wearing and reduces the load on the truck (better mileage) from not having to turn the diff and front drive shaft

Message: I know the gen 2 daks have a vaccum acctuated sepertaor that seperates the passenger side shaft in the axle houseing. The biggers rams still use this setup up to 01. I'm sure the gen 3 daks have it too. shouldn't have problems with a locker, it will just spin the shaft that has nothing connected to it untill you give it a vacum(put it in 4 by).

Message: It's a very good idea to make periodic checks on your CV boot and half shafts for any signs of wear or tear. Your half shafts (front axle) are spinning during normal driving. I had a tear in the CV boot which resulted in the grease leaking/drying out. I ended up destroying the half shafts. The truck was in the shop for 10 days since the dealer had to order new half shafts. I was lucky, I was not out 4 wheeling when this happeded.

Message: You cant put manual hubs on a dakota. the way the frotn cv joints and hubs are designed theyre is no way to install them unless you can somehow use soemthin like off a toyota or similar IFS manual hub. dodge is using cv joints similar to the caravans.
