Well a winch is electrical, so I would say dont do it. There are hydraulic winches, i think they run off of power steering pump or something. Under $500, not unless its used. A come-a-long is a cheap alternative...

take a tow strap and wrap it through the spokes of your tire, let the strap wrap aropund the tire, or do it on both tires if the one only spins

as long as you take it real easy there should be no problem

To put a winch on? I'd put in a stronger battery at the very least.
Personally when I put my winch on I'm going to be running on a dual battery setup with a larger alternator.. I have to agree with Halo3. 2 Tow Straps and a Hi-Lift does just as good of a job as a winch just a little slower. That's what I'm running with right now. I really need to toss a couple of leather gloves that whould have been nice and saved some skin a few times. toss a few Shackles in as well.

Hmmm...I'm starting to think Knobby & I were cut outta the same cloth!! 8^)

If you do find a winch you want, it is an easy matter to do the basic hook-up...simply connect the leads to your battery. As Knobby stated, you will want to get a good-sized battery (I'd suggest a deep-cycle battery like Optima's) and a heavy-duty alternator. That is of course assuming that you don't already have the heavy duty service group on your Dak.

To go a step further, I would get a battery insulator installed, and run the winch off of that.

As a forewarning, let me say that I dropped ~$800 on my Warn XD9000i, and an additional ~$600 on the Warn Trans4mer grill guard. So winch isn't for the faint of heart or wallet. Fortunately, I'm at a point in life where I can be a little over-indulgent in my hobbies. Unfortunately, most people aren't that lucky.

An alternative would be to go with a front reciever hitch (~$120) & a Warn Multi-Mount (~165). That would lower the cost slightly while providing the flexibility (with a rear hitch receiver & additional cabling) of winching from both ends of the vehicle. However, even with this setup, you are still looking at well over double your intended dollar figure.

Bottom line, if you are willing to fork over $1000+, go for a winch. Otherwise, get a come-along (~$40), a Hi-Lift jack (~$50), a chain or two ($15-50 depending on size of links & length), a tow strap (~$60), and a pair of leather gloves (~$20). One other optional component would be a Pull-Pal (~$250)...especially if you plan on wheeling by yourself.

Hi
im fairly new here on this posting board.
I recently went form a Platinum ramsey 9500 to a warn m8000. the ramsey worked great but it was on a hitch mount piece and it was really heavy and a pain to use.( Basically I took the winch mounting plate and welded on soem hitch stock so i could use it as a receiver huitch on the rear. ( more on why if you keep reading) so i sold it for 675$ with the mount and everythign. The winch was a sweet one it was really powerful and I pulled some stuck crew cabs out with help form a heavier truck anchoring me. I can definately recommend a platinum 9500 if you want a GREAT winch for a decent price
anyway I recently installed 33s muds on my stock 2000 dakota 4x4. and installed a warn transformer system and the winch.
Right now 4 wheel parts wholesalers has a special on the M8000 winches for 599$. the brush guard from warn cost me 250 and the winch mount was 89$. I didnt need the side headlight hoops so that saved me 89$.
either way I took the truck out today and got stuck on purpose to see if the winch woudl pull me out. I got stuck in a mud pit on a side tilt buried to the bottom of my doors. the winch pulled me out easily with a single line pull. I can tell you guys that the warn mounting kit was abotu 100X better than the ramsey mounting kit. the ramsey one is flimsy and bends uless you weld it together. the reason is the ramsey has 2 bolts per side holding the brush guard to the frame lenghtening pieces unlike the Warn which has 3 per side and side to side bracing. its really a lot better designed mounting kit. also the other reason it bent is because Ramsey has their winch mount up high abotu grille level unlike the Warn which is pretty much bumper level.
I spent a lot of money on both winches and mounting kits. While I ike the ramsey winch it was by far a lot heavier by about 35 pounds. While it doesnt seem like a lot when its on the front of the truck it really makes the suspension work a lot harder and it makes the front end hop when you hit some bumps. the Warn is a lot lighter about 75 pounds and it pulls as easily as the 9500 did. its great for a dakota sized vehicle and it will do some serious pulling.
I ended up pulling a mitsubishi sport out that was literally pushing a wall of mud. He was there for 2 hours buried and 4 trucks tried to get him out. anyway thought you guys might liek to know my experiences with 2 different brands of winches
Rob

When I was doing research into my recovery system, I compared some of the mounting components between Ramsey & Warn. That research in itself made me go with Warn Trans4mer system. And I definitely have no complaints to date!

Okay...that's kind of a lie. My one complaint is that Warn discontinued the chrome headlight guards for the Trans4mer system; they only carry the black ones now.

under $500 for hydraulic no, but there are cheap (hehe) electric winches; they pull about 1,000-4,500 lbs. i found them in JCWhitney for a max of $420 or minimum of about $200. you can always consider a power puller, they pull 1000-4000 as well and cost $30 or so. youll get a work out though. same with the highlift ($65), if you care to carry that beast. these only use human power.

ok all i have a 2001 qc with the trans4mer mount with the m8000. i'm looking at getting a body lift after talking to Knobbyman va e-mail. (don't know if you remembers me asking you about your lift or not?) after thinking about it i would have to lift up the winch mount in order for it to work cause of how the grill guard wraps aroung the bumper. what i'm looking for is a way to put the 3" body and rase the winch mount along with the body. acording the waren inc. is that there is nothing that i can do. well one thing and that is to get a suspension lift. i'm not made of money and i realy don't want to go through what Knobbyman went through. any ideas? i'm about to give up thinking it can be done. some one out there must have done this or has thought about it.

also the m8000 is great winch. have had no problems with it yet.

thanks for any and all info.

I had to take off my front receiver when I put on my 3" PA body lift last week. Their bumper brackes will not support enought load for a winch. My problem was the lower crossmember that the receiver bolted to is now lower. Or there would be a 3" gap between the valance and the receiver. The receiver will need to be modified to fit around the body lift. Stock it sat 10.5" off of the ground. The rear is 15.5" off the ground. Not the best design for wheeling but is strong enought to use a Hi-Lift. Got both front wheels off the ground.

I am going to mount tow hooks to the frame instead. I will sell the reciever if some one wants it. $Cheap$ Shipping will probable be more $.

I hate to say this, Frank, but...

As a fellow owner of a Trans4mer winch mounting system, I have to say that you are pretty much out of luck on the body lift, Frank. Given the way the Trans4mer system mounts to the frame, through the lower fascia, and is molded around the bumper, you would either have to find a shop to completely refabricate the system or leave your entire bumper, lower fascia, & grill guard right where they are. I'm assuming that you want to go with the Performance Accessories 3" body lift. As such, you would be leaving a ~3" gap between the body (grill actually) & the front bumper.

Now, almost two years later. I am kind of glad that I haven't pursued a lift for the Quad Cab. Bottom line is that it really isn't up to the off-roading that I like doing (I've all ready destroyed on rack & pinion system), and that fact has gotten me to purchase something that is definitely made for off-roading.

Don't get me wrong, my QC has served me admirably through more than 2,000 miles worth of Colorado's best (or should I say worst?) back-country trails. It's just that their are more capable off-road vehicles out there...with a lot more options & parts for setting them up for that role.

hey thanks for the info. i did talk to waren and they said that i could come up with something on my own that would work (pain the the butt).

i must say having the rack & pinion system on these trucks does suck. don't understand why dodge did that. i think it is going to hurt them because of this (just my 2 cents).
well i guess i'll have to save up (my 2 cents)for the next few months and brake down and get a suspension lift. hopfuly rancho comes out with theirs. i put an e-mail in to them to see if they have any idea of a relase date. no word back yet.
