Subject: Tire size IP: Logged
Message: My 2002 4x4 Dakota has 265/70R16 tires. I want to get 18" wheels, but the only exact size in an 18 is a street tread Falken 265/60R18. How will going to a 285/60R18 (1" taller than stock) affect the engine power, gear ratios, etc. Or if anyone knows of an all terrain tire in 265/60R18 size, let me know. Thanks for any info.

Message: Just curious... but why would you want to put 18" wheels on a 4x4?
The only 18" tires I know of are street tires.
There are more tires out for 17" wheels.

Message: Nitto, Toyo and a couple others are starting to see the light and make off-road tires for people with 4x4's and 18 or 20" wheels. So we still maintain the 4x4 capability and turn heads at the same time. Turning heads is an important part of our business and I just need something to look cool. Just look at the new Dodge RAms, they have the 20" option. They're smart to jump on that fad, even the last issue of 4 wheel and Off road stated that the 15 and 16" wheel are starting to go away and more people will opt for the big wheel. As long as there are decent tires to put on those big wheels, I'm all for it. Well, thanks for your input.

Message: One inch won't kill power. You'll notice that it will be a little sluggish for the first few feet off the line, and your engine will rev a tiny bit slower when accelerating through the gears. Your highway RPM will drop about 100-200 RPM. Not a huge change.
I think 18's will look good on a 4X4 as long as you still use a 60 seris tire or higher. Too much less than a 60 series and it would start to look kinda strange and you'd bend a rim if you did any serious rock crawling or hill climbing. The only other visual downside I can think of is that normal sized brakes look puny behind massive wheels.

Message: Those new Nitto Tires look kind of cool. I was thinking how cool it would be so get some 33" ones mounted on some R/T rims for the street and keep a set of mud tires on the stock rims for offroading. If only I had money!

Message: Wheelin' on 18's without a good sized lift? I'd like to be there for that. Don't worry, I keep a tow strap in my YJ.

Message: Thanks for all the replies guys. Dan, how much, if any will it affect my speedometer and odometer? Honestly, I dont go 'wheelin that much I've just always had a 4x4, just in case. Most of the time its on the highway and gravel roads. With the occasional foray off the beaten path, but nothing like the Rubicon or the like. As long as it'll get me thru the snow and occasional mud. Thanks again, people.

Message: You'd be going from 30.6 inches in diameter to 31.5 inches. So your speedo would read 3% lower than before...indicated 60 mph would be just under 62 mph. That's based on the assumption that the tire manufacturer's rated sizes are accurate. If you're interested, most tire companies post on their websites the overall diameter of each one of their tires in all their sizes. That will give you more accurate data to determine the difference you'll see on your speedo.

I agree 17's are cooler but it's hard to get an aggressive offroad tire and backspaceing to get them to stick out of the wheel wells
