Subject: a plan? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking that this is how I was gonna go about with my truck---->
5.5" sus lift ( already have body lift )
36" swampers with new rims
4.56 gears
air locker
I was wondering how this would affect highway/daily driving for me... I am at college and home is about 225 miles away from me. I wouldn't start anything till winter cause I need to start saving. Any input would be great! Thanks
-97 Dak V6 4x4
3" body lift, k&n, black magic, msd ignition, 33" swampers, crower 1.7 rockers, flowmaster 50 dual.

Message: Well, I was gonna get the arb for the back. Can we get it for the front too? I was wondering if a solid axle swap would be cheaper? I was gonna put 4.56 ring gears (front and back of course!) to go with new 36" swampers. An planning on ARB in the back, but I dunno bout the front. Would it work. Cost and extra grand though! I'm figuring about 4-5 grand for all that stuff. I'm still concerned with the MPG of highway driving though. what would a 4.56 ratio and 36" tire combo do to me? Thanx

Message: I think the '97 Dakotas had a Dana 35 in the front end.... But now that I type that... it doesn't sound right.
I would probably .. unless your doing serious off-roading I'd put a limited slip in the back and a ARB up front.... the back would cost you less if you went with a limited slip.. and the front would give you alot more options with a ARB Airlocker up there.
;-) just a way to spend more $$ though ;-)

Message: the front is either a 35 or 44... but i can never remember! God, i think i know everything bout the dak cept the damn front end! Dam* IFS. So, u think air locker in front and limited slip in back? Just curious, why that combo? What kind of "options" would I have. It's just I wanna know my money is being spent on the best combo =) Thanks!

Message: Well the absolute best would be a ARB up front & in back.. but that'd be crazy $$..
I think for me personally I'd go w/ a LSD in the back that way I could drive it on the road just fine and not wory about it being locked & skippin around the turns.. if that didn't bother you though I'd go w/ a true locker in the back. Up front you should have something and a ARB would totally lock the front up. But when your driving on the road you wouldn't want the front tires locked together.. that's just bad. Either ARB or LSD up front.. my vote would be ARB just because it's better for off-roading.

Message: Well, money doesn't bother me if it's well spent. So, if an ARB for front and back is the best that's what I'd want. I wouldn't want a true locker in the back...Just don't like the idea of turning and skippin around. And I wouldn't have thge air locker on on the road anyways...If I need traction on road, I'll just flip it into 4x4 and that's it. So, I guess ARB for front and back then. Correct? Best abng for the buck? Hope so... This is like a 2 year plan anyways just cause I'm in college and stuff.
What about getting 4.56 gears with 36" swampers on 15x10 rims? What kind of highway driving am i lookin at? rpm? mpg? Thanks

Message: Tony , the 4.56s with 36 swampers should be fine , not sure how the v6 will pull them though.I would highly recomend the radial version , they will ride better and last longer with a little more money up front. As far as the front end on the Daks. it a DANA 35 IFS. Very weak for big tires and serious off roading, for everyday use around town you will be fine. I was going to do a straight axle conversion on my 99 but sold it. I still have the front end(DANA 44) with new rotors , 4.56 gears, all seals and bearings and matching 4.56 gears for the rear sitting at my friends garage:( All totaled it would have been around 5 to 7 grand to have the entire swap done . Believe me there is alot more involved than you could imagine! Sure would have been awesome though. There is a 99CC around here (FL) that the same shop built that has the same set-up running 39.5 boggers with a Ford 9in. in the rear and coil overs up front the thing is BAD A$$ and the guy drives it everyday and it`s show quality. Sorry for rambling just my 2cents good luck whatever you decide.

Message: Well, I'm planning on off roading pretty rough... The front end won't handle 36" tires off roading?
That's what I'm getting out of this...

Message: 36's on a Dak would be for show only (w/o a straight axle conversion) especially w/ a locker up front. You bomb that thing offroad w/ a locker and your asking for trouble. Plus I don't think there is a ARB for our front ends. They just finally came out w/ one for our rear ends a few months ago. You want to really make a trailworthy rig you would be better off w/ a mild lift, 33's and limited slip in the rear w/ an open front. Big tires and ground clearance are fine but not if it makes your truck more fragile. If you just gotta go more hardcore than that buy a jeep.

Message: Well I think a normal locker in front will mess with 4 wheel drive engament, I am pretty sure it will always try to engange the hubs(bad) or the t case depending on the exact set up. Oh course they make an arb for a dana 35, thats what 90 percent of the yj's had in them. I wouldn't trust the axle with 36's however, I had a 94 jy and it had a arb with 33's and a four cylinder, tour the hell out of the rear, only lasted for like 4 or 5 good wheelin trips.

Message: The dana35s in the YJs are a striaght axle not IFS , and they are not compatable from what i`ve read.I believe with a set of 33s and a locked REAR you are going to be able to go anywhere you felt like with your Dakota.I had a set of 33 boggers on a Toy 4WD w/V6 and it went places in 2WD that others could hardly make it in 4WD. It all dependes on the tires and skill of the driver. Also be carefull with that Tuff Country lift off road , I broke one of the major drop down brackets on mine just by turning into my daughters day care to pick her up.I had the wheels turned and it was a small, but steep, concrete incline , all of a sudden POW . Limped it home and had it welded up.Can`t imagine what would happen in serious terrain!

Message: so whats the point of having the sus lift if its gonna break on ya? I dunno from these posts it seems as though the dakota cant handle shi*... but i love my dak dont get me wrong. So, what is the best combo without breaking something then. I'm really confused now and someone please tell me what they think i should do!

Message: Hey guys, take a look see at this web site, its mine: www.zebra.net/~daniel/goat.html
That is a 98 Dak CC 4x4 with a TuffCountry 5.5 sus.lift and a 3in body lift. Those are 36 SuperSwampers on there. This truck is my daily driver as well as my play toy. We do not ride gently on our trucks. The truck now has 100,000+miles on it, with about 30,000 of that with the lift and tires.
Oh, and here is a site with pics from some of our rides: www.extreme4x4.net

Message: Hero, I`m glad to see you haven`t had any problems , all I can say is from what problems I had ,I wouldn`t feel comfortable taking it off-road and beating the crap out of it , for fear of something breaking. Thats just my opinion , as I had too much $$$ tied up in my truck and it was my only means of transportation. I wanted the truck up high for looks and so I could see in traffic better. Tony ,I dont want to say that the Dakotas aren`t built tuff ,I am refering to the lift kit and larger , heavier and more offset wheels taking it`s toll on the front end that was designed for 31in tires.

Message: Hey Hero,
Here is a web link with another 98 like yours
http://www.geocities.com/toy_dakota/Tuff_Dakota.html
He has 36x14.5x15 tires. Since you go off-roading a lot. Do you think those 14.5 would cause any problems ????
thanks, ~Bill~

Message: Honestly,
Unless that pic was taken right after the install and wash/detail job, it dosent look like it has left the pavement. But Im pretty sure that (s)he is going to have some clearance problems on the front end with the tires and the rear of the wheel well. If you look that the rear of the front wells on my truch you can see that I have had to do some pretty serious trimming on the fender flares. I also get a bit of rub on the frame at full turn, more if I am flexed up any.
To answer you question directly, yes I think that 14.5s will cause some clearance issues with the rear of the front wheel wells. I dont recommend going more than 12.5's. But thats my opinion, and we all know how those work. :)
Hope this helps.
