Subject: 2WD on the beach IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone else taken their 2WD (or 4X4 in 2WD) out on the beach or loose sand? I tried last year, with no success. Dont know whether it was that I was going way too slow, and i was..., or if the truck is just really heavy. Has anyone else had any luck? Thinking about putting a Powertrax out back and trying again this year. Thanks.

Message: You can do it, you have to air down your tires to 10-12psi so they 'float' on the sand.

Message: I do it in 2wd all the time. Airing down your tires does make it quite a bit easier. It takes some time and practice. You have to really learn to feel your truck and know when to give it gas, when to back off, etc.

Message: Most of ours here is fine white sugar sand. 2wd's go on it every day. Just have to know what you are doing. I know a guy whoe drives a 2wd truck and pulls out 4x4's all day long at the beach. I only use 4wd once in a while there myself.

Message: When I do air down I usually go to about 12 psi in all 4. I have a small compressor that plugs into the cig lighter for emergencies, but there is a gas station right when you leave the beach, so thats where I usually air up at.

Message: I've done it in 2WD with tires aired down between 10- 15psi in a few spots on the east coast. I've fished the surf in Cape Cod, MA, Island Beach, NJ, Assateague, MD, Chincoteague, VA, and Cape Hatteras, NC. However all my previous trucks were 4X4's with posi rears and at least 33" rubber so I knew all I had to do was pull back on the transfer case shifter if I hit some 'quicksand', LOL. Like dakotamaxx said if you don't know what you're doing you'll be in deep $hit in no time, oops. Some of these places charge a fee for 'beach buggy' access and they require you to carry equipment to get unstuck as well as fishing tackle. They don't want people on their beach joyriding:(
Also like Hawkeye said it takes practice and experience in order to be able to navigate through the sand successfully. If you follow the tracks of others for the most part you'll be ok, it's when you try to veer off and try to cut a new path in the sand that you'll start to bog down. When you feel this happening you have to get off the gas immediately or you will bury it to the framerails in seconds. Don't forget also it don't matter if you have a 2WD or 4WD truck you have to air down all four tires not just the rears, I've seen that also.
My brother just bought a compressor for his Jeep that he's going to mount on his fender under the hood and hardwire it into the battery. It's quick as hell but also very expensive:( I'll just use the gas station as Hawk mentioned or some of the fee charging places have air-up stations with compressed air available.

Message: I have lots of experience with sand driving being a shore guy and all, not to mention all the offroading i do is in a 20 square mile sand pit. ;) Airing down the tires works well, but driving techniques are what are most helpful.
If you are stopped, dont stomp the peddle, youll just end up digging a big hole. Don't slam the brades too hard either, it builds up piles of sand in front of your tires, making it damn near impossible to start again.
I always carry at least two 2x6's and a shovel in the bed of my truck. if you get stuck, dig out around your tires, and use the boards like ramps. usually works really well.
Hope this helped.

Message: I have a 92 CC 2WD with Wilderness AT 235/75 R15s on them and we vacation at Topsail NC and a few years ago I got way stuck in the driveway of the house we stay in. It got so low in the rear that the tailpipe was touching the bed. It sucked, took a durango and two tow straps to get me out.(The Durango was terrible though. Says 4x4 on the back but with it in 4WD it almost got stuck spinning it's 2 tires. Didn't even have posi. If I ever get the pics scanned I'll post them. It was pretty bad.
