Message: it might be a while before someone does a straight axle conversion on a newer dakota because of the fact that they have the rack-and-pinion steering. they would most likely have to find some way of puting a steering box on the truck or go to a full-on hydrolic steering setup.

Message: I have done an axle swap on a 98 Dakota to view the project in progress go to
http://www.maxtire-4x4.com/DakProject.html
we got rid of the rack pinion steering all together and put a jeep steering box...
the truck should be ready in two weeks
The axle came from a 1980 jeep wagoneer Dana 44 and it has a dana track lock with 456 gear ratio

Message: I did not have to shorten the axle it mached up pretty good.. actually real good if you see the pictures.... the axle will not be leaf sprung instead ... the axle will be hung with 12 inch King offroad coil over shocks... the axle is in place by making Custom trailing arms and a stabilizer arm to control for axle sway and bump steer... if you look at the pictures on the website
http://www.maxtire-4x4.com/DakProject.html
you can see the trailing arms ... next week we will be constructing the shock hoops which will hold the King coil over shocks... and yes they were expensive.. 600.00 for each shock...
