Message: I own a '97 Ram 1500 with a three inch lift and 33 x 12.5 x 15 tires with ten inch rims. Approximately two years ago I purchased a Road Armor front bumper with the full safari guard. This bumper weighs around 400 to 500 pounds. My truck had about 70,000 miles on it when the bumper was installed. My problem is front wheel bearing failure. Within two months of the installation I replaced the original bearings (which had lasted 70,000 miles). That same year I changed both front bearings six times. I documented the mileage each time and noticed that the $130 a piece bearings lasted about 2,000 miles on average. There seems to be a general consensus on the problem of bearing failure which is attributed to the offset of the aftermarket 10 inch rims combined with the weight of the bumper. The rims and tires were installed on the truck when it had about 29,000 miles. The bearing failure started promptly after the bumper installation. I hope somebody out here has a Dodge with the same problem. I'll gladly welcome any advice. And by the way, removing the bumper or the big tires is not an option. Thanks.

Message: wow, that's pretty crazy. i wouldnt think the bumper would have anything to do with bearing failure. i was thinking alignment, but then the tires would wear out first. at 2000 miles and $130 a pop, i would not be a happy camper. i wanted one of these bumpers for my dorkota, but i dont want bearing replacements.

Message: I have had no issues with the Hanson bumper and winch but its total weight is about 250-300 lbs. and I do not use a different off set from stock for this very reason.
I can see how the off set combined with the extra weight could do damage to the front suspension, make sense now that I think about it.

Message: its not the bumper causing the problem re-read his original post and you will see that there is a small reference to wider wheels and a change in offset, which is really back spacing, that change in back spacing is why the bearings die not the 250 extra pounds on the front end.
note:
500 lbs minus the 250 lb original weight equals 250 extra lbs on the front. heck 250 lbs is just the weight of his GF and since she's been ridin in it nothing happend so it must be the wheel ofset, and EVERYONE KNOWS A WIDER WHEEL OFFSET WILL TRASH THE FRONT BEARINGS.
