Message: I don't know how familier you are with the newer jeeps (TJ) but my friend has a 98 TJ with the 4.0 liter and automatic. He's looking to lift it some and doesn't want a bodylift (looks bad on jeeps). I recommended a 2" to 2.5" suspension lift and if neccesary a 1" body lift. He only wants to clear 31's or 32's if possible. He doesn't like the small lifts because they don't have longer arm and he thinks they'll screw up his handling. Any idea of how good these small lifts are. Typically they only change the springs and steering pitman arm. The only other option is the 4" superlift which is under $500 but something seems fishy since all the other 4" lifts are $700+.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Corey

Message: Corey,
TJ's are great jeeps. A TJ can clear 31" without any lift at all. Not a ton of room for articulation but it shouldn't rub even with aftermarket wheels. If he wants 32's, A small 2+" suspension lift would be more than enough. They are fine lifts and shouldn't screw with your handling but if your buddy's going to do it, he should think about getting a 3-4" lift. I went with procomp, they are extremely stiff and are great for wheelin' but terrible on the road...but mine isn't a daily driver. I had the 4" procomp with shocks and absolutely everything you'll need, including new polyurethane bushings, installed for $900. This was a couple of years ago and the lift has held up well. Of course, with a TJ, having coil-springs really help the ride. I also went with a set of extended shackles for the rear which made it sit nicer. Something your buddy should check into as well. Superlift makes a nice lift for TJ's and the price is pretty decent. If he goes with a 4", you really won't need an extended driveline kit unless he commutes 50 miles a day with it. Also, if he goes for the 4", 33's will look the best and he may want to purchase extended brake lines if he's going to do some extreme crawling.
Anyway, sorry this was such a mess and let me know if there are any other questions.

Message: Thank you very much for the info. He and I were both a little unsure about the 2" lifts. Do you know of a good site like this one except for jeeps that he could post messages. He really wants to get into fixing up his jeep and needs some help (he's been a Toyota man too long).
Also, what are some recommendations for power adders on the 4.0. FIPK, Exhaust, throttle body.
I guess if he starts really fixing it up I'll have to drop some money and lift up my Dakota. Damn this competition!
Thanks again,
Corey

Message: Corey,
I don't use any jeep forums but I know there are a million out there. Just have him search through google. As for power add-ons...I have a custom K&N intake, but I know they have one out for the 4L, and a Borla header, performance cat, and borla exhaust. That made an incredible difference in performance. I'll tell you one thing, that setup makes my little 4LHO haul-a$$ even with 33 muds. I don't know if he has a soft-top or a hard-top but if he just has the soft-top and wants a replacement, have him check out the sunrider by bestop. It's fantastic and it allows you to just have the sunroof (front) portion open.
He made a good choice on the engine. The 4L I6 is a bulletproof motor. I have 150K miles on my YJ and it still purrrrrrs like a kitten. Only thing needed replacing was the waterpump. Phenomenal engine.
I still love my dakota though. ;) Still waiting on some concrete info on the new truckin' suspension lifts.
Good luck! Let me know if you need anything else.
