Subject: U-joints going bad? IP: Logged
Message: My truck will make a popping noise when I hit a bump or take off from a stop after I have drove if for an extended period of time, like 2 hours. It doesn't do every single time but often. And it will quit once the truck has sat for a while and cooled down like over night. I've been told it might be a u-joint or the transmission. Any ideas? I would really appreciate the info.

Message: Have the fluid level in your tranny checked. Also, check the fluid level in your front and rear differentials. How many miles on your truck?

Message: most likely the popping noise over bumps is the lower ball joints. they had a problem with the lower ball joints in the early gen3 dakotas and have corrected the ball joint. you can check them by using a floor jack, and jack up on the lower control arm close to the tire, lift tire up a couple of inches so you can lift up and down on wheel with a pry bar. you will be able to feel play in the joint, or have somebody watch the ball joint for movement up and down.

Message: I just had shocks done on my 94 jimmy slt 4wd. The noise is still there when i go over a bump its like almost like something is lose underneath the car. i check the tires to see if the lugs where tight and they where. The noise comes mostly from the rear.

Message: It was the lower ball joints. It was a major pain to replace them but I did it. I am now getting ready to replace the uppers. They should be a ton easier to replace.

Message: I have a 99 4x4 Club Cab and need to do my lowers, I bought the Moog problem solvers.
I have a Ball joint press tool (the big C-clamp type with the adapter tubes etc.)
I did the uppers last year myself.
What did you have to remove to get the lowers in?
Did you pull out the CV shafts and disconnect the tie rod ends or could you leave all that in place and get them in?
Thanks for any tips, <2 hrs sounds like you found a easy method!
