Subject: front & rear differential fluids IP: Logged
Message: How often do you guys change your front & rear differential fluids? I dont think I have ever heard a specific time frame...
Also, is there a TRUE/PROVEN gain or loss in performance when using synthetic fluids vs. the conventional fluids in the differentials???

Message: I have always changed diff, tranny, and xfer fluids around 30,000 miles. There are those who NEVER do this with no problems. If you change the stuff once during your ownership, you will be ahead of most people.
I keep mileage data and in every vehicle I have owned since 1972, mpg's have gone up upon switching to synthetic in the gear boxes. Never had a failed tranny or axle. I drove my last vehicle (88 Jeep Cherokee) every day for 14 years.
Use a GL-5 rated synthetic gear oil in the diffs.
The tranny ( at least the NV-3500) requires a GL-4 rated gear oil.
